Notes: Chomp hits for ~375+ damage single target. Fat Press is an incredibly nasty AoE that hits for ~375+ damage as well. Squeak is used by Grave Bats for ~95+ damage and heals for the damage dealt.
Recommended Lvl: 6 (So Fat Press doesn't 1-shot half your party)
Lloyd - Line Orange: Evade 1, HP 1
Line Blue: Evade 1, Action 1
Randy - Attack 1
Elie - Evade 1
Tio - HP 1
Upgraded weapons for all as well as a Colorful Pinwheel and Fine Sandals for Lloyd are fairly important.
Recommended Items: Might need healing items.
Positioning: I have them setup in an upside down L near the middle of the grid.

Drops: Punk fools like YOU!
Notes: Wald's regular attacks hit for ~215+. He can also use Ogre Slash for ~215+ in a Line based AoE that will debuff your move. Wald's trademark move Neck Hang will hit you for a whopping ~370 and he will never miss it.
Recommended Lvl: 6 (nearly mandatory)
Lloyd - Line Orange: Evade 1, HP 1
Line Blue: Evade 1, Action 1
Fine Sandals and Colorful Pinwheel are basically mandatory for the fight. Bravery Badge would certainly help your damage as well.
Recommended Items: At least 1 healing item is probably mandatory. More than 5 is completely unnecessary however.
Positioning: Largely doesn't matter. Still had Lloyd at the top of the grid.
Wald is a fairly dangerous boss. He hits moderately hard with his regular attacks and Ogre Slash but the real nasty move is Neck Hang. After every 4 attacks Wald will use Neck Hang (it's the 5th attack). Don't let him fake you out with him getting pissed when he's at 66% and 33%. While he might gobble up those turns to throw insults at you they don't count as an attack. If you aren't full when this move comes out you've lost the fight. He'll most likely get 2 Neck Hangs off before the fight ends.
In order to beat this boss you'll need to drop 1 200% CP S-Craft, 2 100% CP S-Crafts + some change in normal damage swings. Make sure to start the fight with 200% CP. You'll be an unhappy camper if you don't. Even with all of this you'll probably need ~2 dodges in order to have pumped enough damage into him to finish him off. You can also "save turns" by popping a healing item instead of using a Tear heal as it doesn't take a cast and is a low delay move thus saving you 1 to 2 turns depending per item popped.
DO NOT cast offensive arts!!
The reason is they take 2 times as many turns, can get you into delay trouble and use up valuable EP that's needed for healing. Instead, just tonfa Wald's face in till he goes crying home to mommy. With a little luck or a lot of very good choices you should win the fight and get your additional 3 DP proving you got what it takes.
The only two viable arts are Forte and Tear. Everything else either doesn't do enough damage, or doesn't provide enough benefits.
Can't recommend Forte. There's a few problems with it:
1) You have to double stack it to get some real value out of it. +25% STR doesn't do much. +50% STR does a helluva lot more. (Good luck with Wald swinging away at you for 215+)
2) It's a 3 turn buff. A single cast of Tear means it's guaranteed to fall off.
3) It's 29 Delay on the cast which, on occasion, can get you into trouble.
4) It uses 2 turns to apply the buff which is 2 turns you're not swinging at Wald.
5) If you're casting and Wald wiffs the hit you don't get the counterattack.
6) It's EP you don't really have.
The fight gets quite chaotic if you're trying to maximize Forte's power. You CAN of course still beat the fight but you're just adding problems to your plate for no real reason and probably need to have more healing items in your pool to compensate on a serious lack of turns to deal damage and EP to actually heal.
Earth Pulse, however, might be on the list of viable arts. The regen lasts 5 turns instead of 3 and ticks are big enough that you can "buy turns" after Neck Hangs and sometimes after regular attacks. It also gives 1 free regen tick after casting. I'm not sure whether it's a wash though and you'd want 2 more slots opened on your orbment just to run it.
Regardless, that fight was the toughest so far next to the Nepenthes G from Chapter 2 who managed to AOE nuke my Level 24 Lloyd and Co. into oblivion before I even got a turn. That was fun.

Notes: Both Mafioso's hit for ~230+ damage. Mafioso - Pistol likes to spam his Quick Shot AoE for ~230+ damage. Armor-Piercing Shell is another skill used that does ~230+ damage and has a -25% DEF Down on it. Mafioso - Machete has a melee AoE in Chop for ~230+ damage. Flash hits incredibly hard for no less than 470+ damage on a single target.
Recommended Lvl: 6 (Wazy is lvl 8)
Recommended Party: Lloyd, Randy (+ Wazy)
Lloyd - Line Orange: Evade 1, HP 1
Line Blue: Evade 1, Action 1
Randy - Line Orange: Attack 1
Line Green: Attack 1, Action 1
Buying Randy a pair of Fine Sandals + a Colorful Pinwheel would not be a bad idea for this fight.
Recommended Items: Healing items would be helpful but aren't necessary. Juicing up your offense with a Supreme Latte wouldn't be a bad idea but again... unnecessary.
Positioning: Doesn't matter here either.

The 2nd reason is that Randy is just kind of OP for this fight and especially this early on so much that he blows your other 2 choices out of the water. The 3rd and most important reason is the trademark bros before hoes! No I kid, Elie is waifu material though you'll get the stink eye from me if you're going after Tio (kid sister - yes waifu - no). So 3 very important reasons.
In regards to the fight, your biggest danger throughout the fight is going to be Mafioso - Machete. Flash hits HARD and can end one of you party if you get caught off guard. Armor-Piercing Shell can also get you into trouble if it precludes a Flash to the face. Regardless, the name of the game is to pound these dollar store "yaegers" into the ground. Your best bet is to "herd" the 2 mafioso next to each other by giving them a good thrashing from the right angles. Wazy can use his Phantom Rush in order to slap on a -50% SPD down effect as well. Gathering up the mafiosos allows Randy to Power Smash the both of them leading to basically endless turns for yourself as you slowly smack them into a corner with endless AT Delay. It's game over once they hit the corner. The rest of the fight is censored.
As for Wazy, you can think of him like as a "mage knight". He's got high EP and a good ATS stat. So cast arts (I recommend Icicle Edge and Soul Blur) on these guys after they'd both been SPD downed. It might be a good idea to get used to him as he may or may not be a reoccurring character...
Enjoy your first real accomplishment as the SSS.
I actually went with a total different strategy for the fight with Wald
I placed Lloyd in the corner and had him use his 200CP Tiger Charge in the initial round and cast Icicle Edge on Wald instead of using melee and his 100CP S-Craft whenever possible, I used Tear Balm and EP Charge to heal and recharge if needed.
I equipped Lloyd with the latest armour and weapon, HP 1 and Action 1, went with about 10 Tear Balms and 2 EP Charges, and 1 Battle Scope to scan Wald.
The only challenge is to defeat Wald within the round limit and keeping track of when Wald will use his Neck Hang.
The battle with Wald is similar to the fight with Mueller back in Trails in the Sky SC and the 3rd except there is a round limit this time round
I'm currently in Chapter 3 now, I paused playing Trails of Cold Steel 3 mainly because of wanting to follow the story line.
Trails of Cold Steel 3 is the best game in the arc by a long shot imo. It had the sickest setup I've ever seen going into Cold Steel 4 and CS 4 just decided to do a belly flop with it. Damn near killed any enthusiasm I had for the series.
After Reverie's probably where i'll bail. But... as you can tell it's looking to be awhile before I get around to it.
I'm aiming to play as much as I can, currently at the final chapter of this game.
Looks like I will not be able to complete this game with max DP, missed out few food items that will give extra DP for a food related quest, hahas...
Edit:
I just completed the game, managed to unlock an hidden achievement requires you to complete the game with all characters at level 40 or below (I read about it in one of the guides in the internet), although it took me at least 10 tries to get it as the bosses in the final dungeon are level 40 and above XD.
Had to avoid and flee from all random encounters and avoid the monster chest when you arrived in the final chapter dungeon while minimising the exp multipliers as much as possible during the boss fights to ensure they don't go above level 40.
Will be doing another run in the final chapter to do a complete run before going to Trails to Azure.
I actually played Azure after I had played Cold Steel I + II and I am supremely glad for this. Why? Because going from the best in the series to what's probably the worst would've been infuriating. 1st games in a new arc are always slow to start but Cold Steel I was just boring, bad and had a "made for kids" vibe. Sets up the 2nd worst cliffhanger in the entire series then doesn't deliver in Cold Steel II.
The Crossbell duology on the other hand is the darkest arc in the series as far as I'm aware (haven't played Reverie nor the Kuros). The arc goes hard and it's kind of a reminder of why Godzilla Minus One should take best movie of 2023 + 2024.
Regardless, maybe it's time I got around this mental block. If any two of the Trails games deserve the boss threads it's Zero and Azure.
