Is this game dead?
This game is strictly PVP only with no other content attached to it. I have 0 issues with that, but turning One Step From Eden into a PVP game gives me an immediate warning since PVP-only games require large, active player bases to work. If they don't, then the game dies or gets put on life support (using discord to find matches with the same tiny group of diehard fans).

A PVP game based on a PVE roguelite with MBN mechanics sounds like an extremely niche area that no one asked for, so can I ask how large and active the community is? Can you find matches quickly or is the game dead/dying? The game is cheap, but I wouldn't want to pay to sit in a 2 hour queue because almost no one is playing.

All non-mainstream fighting games are like that. You can check the active player base for yourself on steamcharts.com.

there is a discord, when you start the game up, one of the options in the main menu is to join this discord

Game is here if you want to play it, it's cheap so you can always invite friends
And yeah there are active people on Discord so you can ask for matches here
I haven't played in a good while but from what I've seen the Discord is still very active, it's not an absurd amount of player, but it's still an active fanbase
It's an indie fighting game, it's how it works, especially with a gameplay that niche, and the game is pretty cheap, it's not like you paid for a full priced game and 10 DLC characters
