World War 2 Operation Husky
July 13, 2021 The Cobra

A light wargame and very suitable for multiplayer: World War 2 Operation Husky is a nice diversion for the summer period.

We have recently anticipated some news about Operation Husky; the author is a Canadian airline pilot with too much free time due to the cancellation of flights due to Covid.
Operation Husky is his first video game, made more for personal fun than having a clear commercial project in mind, but despite this the result is more than decent.

Immersed in the war theater of the Allied landing in Sicily in 1943, we will find ourselves fighting for control of a portion of the territory between Alcamo and Sciacca, in the western area of the island. In all honesty, we initially found ourselves a bit confused, we expected to fight on the entire island; the reduced combat zone, however, is not a real limit to the game.

The rules are simple and explained at the beginning of the game, and are easily understood by any player who is at least familiar with strategy games. The aim is to have control of as many strategic areas as possible at the end of the tenth game round; control of the area is achieved - obviously - by having our units on the territory, and in the case of disputed territories, the first to enter the area will be the army in control.

World War 2 Operation Husky is a very simple game, yet its dynamics are solid and well thought out. There are no control zones or supply lines that can be interrupted, but the planning of the movement of the front is vital for the success of the campaign as well as the management phase of replacements. With a variable and semi-random number of reinforcement points at each turn. We will be able to chose one unit per turn to be completely repaired and deploy new ones by deciding the type, combat strength, movement points and hit points available. It is possible to combine weaker units to obtain a stronger one and free up space (in each territory it is possible to have only three units at the same time).

The morphology of the terrain, with forests and mountains, affects movement and combat, and if the Germans have an advantage in being able to exploit their defensive position, the Americans can make use of air strikes and artillery to weaken the Germanic units.

After becoming familiar with the game, the battle develops well and frenetically. The subdivision of the territory into zones (with an approach that is very reminiscent of Battle Of The Bulge) simplifies the management of movement and planning of attacks, making it possible to move the front quickly (with all that entails).

The game has clearly been developed for multiplayer (hot-seat, wifi and server modes are present, but not asynchronous via PBEM), and this is where the game gives its best, with truly unexpected results.
In single player, the AI shows its side, capable of attempting bypasses and penetrations into the territory left unguarded, but also the author of semi-suicide attacks by isolated units against well-manned defensive lines.

Hubert Cachat, the developer behind Operation Husky, preferred to keep the game lean and immediate, so as to make his title immediately usable; and the result is very good. In its simplicity Operation Husky is perfect for starting new people in strategic war games (this is how the game was developed) or for organizing quick fights between friends who have only a couple of hours available, also considering the very affordable price range on which you place.
World War 2 Operation Husky is available on Steam.
