VR works really well in 3rd person. Check out Hellblade or GTA 5.

The world is in 3d, like you are in it. The camera stays in one place, you can look around anywhere and control the character using the tracked motion controllers in the same way as you would with an x-box controller. But with freedom to look anywhere you like. You're in the game world, not looking at it through a window.

It's actually pretty awesome. Hellblade Senua Sacrifice has official VR support. You play sitting down with a controller as you would, but it's like you are the camera man following the character from behind. You get the full sense of scale as you are literally right there and free head movement to look around you as you control the character. Gives you much more awareness and it's very cool.
