To get the most out of it, yes, but it is mostly a standalone adventure.

I never played an Uncharted game before this one. I didn't feel like I missed anything while playing this.

The game stands on it's own, it is implied your character has gone on previous adventures and the game references certain characters but nothing from previous games directly ties in to this one
