3 Games that have incredible graphics, but when I see screen-space reflections, it just makes the game look bad.
God of War with ray tracing would crush any graphics card out there but it would look out of this world. Alfheim with RT reflections, that would be a dream!
I doubt it will crush the 6900XT-6950XT/3080TI/4090, god of war runs at around 140fps maxed out on my system with a 6950XT, with RT on it should be around 60fps which is playable.
Ray Tracing is overrated. The lighting in this game is monotone and boring for the most part. Funny enough, at night levels it actually looks quite nice and has some volumetric light effects that look pretty good.
Look at A Plague Take Requiem WITHOUT ray tracing. Look at so many games. Look at Guardians of the Galaxy, I think It's pretty much #1 for best looking graphics in any game ever. The game does not even use raytracing got for lightning, just for reflections, and you do not need more than "high" that actually is the lowest setting.
The reflections in puddles and things are pretty nice without it, where RT really shines in the game is the transparent reflections.
Look at Spider Man, same thing, RT only used for reflections, and you can perfectly live without the perfect reflections on Windows. It's a nice luxury to have.
Nvidia loves to sell RT because AMD is not as good at it, but mostly it makes things just easier for devs, especially when it comes to reflections. But good fake reflections work, Unreal Engine also has good fake reflections they key thing is to have something moving in the reflections, not that they are perfectly looking perfect resolution accurate reflections. When it comes to lightning, same thing, it can help devs make things looks nice without much work, but that is it.
Look a Resident Evil 2 remake, how awesome the lightning is, RT is BARELY even doing anything to the game, it almost looks exactly the same!
I don't know if it is a problem of poor environmental occlusion, lack of an advanced light and shadow system or something else.
I would have preferred the in-game graphics to be like that of the cut scenes, and today it would be DEFINITELY possible huh ...
I see where you're coming from but I disagree. Yes, Nvidia tries and push the technology because their GPUs are better equipped for it, but it's not like RT doesn't make any difference. And Yes, many games look stunning with baked lighting and shadows, but when you put side by side comparison of RT and non RT you can see the differences. You used RE2 Remake as an example, the RT version looks waaay better. The lounge area is totally different, the non RT has the floor reflecting the oddest things with one the worst looking SSR out there. You load the RT version and it's fixed, the floor looks like a floor and objects look grounded. Metro Exodus is another game that you can tell RT just changes the game. RT is a must? Well, no, many games do look stunning without it, but to say it doesn't make any difference is not remotely right. Maybe you didn't notice it yet, before I became a PC player I couldn't tell 30fps from higher fps, once I noticed it, it's night and day for me. Some people can't tell huge difference in resolution. Maybe that's the case with RT for you.
