Possible fix for vibration not working on PS5 Dualsense controller
Issue: Disabling Steam Input so the PS5 controller uses haptic feedback causes vibration not to work

Solution: Every person who uses a PS5 controller wired to their computer has most likely gone into Sound settings and disabled the speakers/microphone so they do not hijack your Windows default audio devices.

Turn these back on.

Settings -> System -> Sound -> Under either Output or Input click "Manage sound devices."

Enable Output devices -> Speakers (Wireless Controller) and Input devices -> Headset Microphone (Wireless Controller)

As usual, this will cause Windows to be a dumb-dumb and automatically set your default audio devices to the controller. Flip those back to your normal setup and launch the game. Haptic and vibration should work now. Simply using the d-pad in the main menu should cause a little rumble, so you don't even have to load into the game to see if it's working.

Remember, all this haptic stuff only works with wired usb connections, not bluetooth.

Id like to keep them disabled, How come Spiderman did not need that fix? Can they not make it work with that stuff disabled? I disable everything but my mic and my main soundcard.

Agreed.

It's obviously an incompetent oversight and no other game requires these steps. I find it extra silly because one of the few upgrades Sony's fluff piece press releases mention is PS5-style haptic feedback. However, it's blatantly obvious the port studio did not test the functionality whatsoever.

But at least after learning this trick and how to get HDR working, the game is playable at this point.

Not true.

Death Stranding Director's Cut also has the haptics and requires the audio channels to be enabled.

Interesting, thanks for the clarification. I had only played the original release of Death Stranding.

It would have been nice if someone was aware of that during all the initial launch troubleshooting posts! The only thing that pointed in this direction was a user mentioning plugging into new usb ports would sometimes solve the problem.

From what I've been able to figure out, the data used for the advanced rumble and the actual resistance on the haptic triggers is actually transmitted over those audio channels by default.

No idea why some games need it and others don't though.

Vibration is not working for the xbox controller either.

Separately, it took me ages to find out how to turn off adaptive triggers whilst keeping haptic feedback on; it's labelled under 'trigger effects' in the menu.

Legend. Thank you

Sorry to dig this old thread up.

But I just started playing Hogwarts Legacy with my new PS5 controller and I my controller won't rumble at all in game. The only way I can get it to rumble is if I set my sound output in Windows to the controller, but then no sound comes from my speakers of course. And even if I enable the controller as audio, but switch the sound output to my speakers, then it completely stops rumbling in game.

Has anyone experienced anything similar or have any tips?

I’m experiencing the same using ps5 controller for Hogwarts legacy

For those wanting sound from their usual audio device (and not the controllers speakers)

Right click Hogwarts Legacy > Properties > Controller > Enable Steam Input.

:)

Wow that definitely helped! While it is not exactly the same rumble as when my sound output is set to the controller, where it would slightly rumble when I walked around, it still feels so nice for the controller to rumble when casting spells and dodging.

Thank you very much:)

Just wanted to leave quick Thank You because I just had this happen with Returnal and was wondering why my vibration wasn't working (even though the adaptive triggers still worked). Cheers.
