For me it was:
mace + shield for tanks
axe + shield and mace + shield for the ones with two sets of weapons
axe + dirk for animal trainers
bow for alchemists and archers
I'm not saying it's best, just givein an example how I did it.
Yeah I read before that the bow is much more common than crossbow toward classes, and that it makes upgrading more efficient ressource-wise.
I am still on the fence though, I'm postponning my campaign, ill come back to it later and decide then.

Alchemist = Xbow = More Power for Pots
Beastmaster = XBow/Bow
Flayer = Bow
I think its because i am english and stand by the longbow aswell.
Crossbows are a bit better for alchemists. I ended up upgrading both.
