Haven't played 5 or Rising, so my list goes in a weird order of:
  1. Suikoden 1 (I have heavy nostalgia as a wee bab)
  2. Suikoden 2
  3. Suikoden 3 and/=/or Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes
  4. Suikoden 4 and/=/or Suikoden Tierkries
Special shoutout to Ni No Kuni 2 for at least weirdly scratching the itch of "collecting a bunch of unique townspeople by meeting various criteria for them throughout the game so you can make your kingdom better and having very Suikoden-style war games." If that game actually let you use some of those people as party members in the actual RPG section of the game, I'd swear they were trying to do a Suikoden game... as a sequel for a game that had none of that.

If you really like scratching that itch, check out the Dark Cloud games, especially Dark Cloud 2. You'll probably dig it. They're a bit harder to get ahold of these days, but they're very good.

Oh, edit since I forgot to include my own ranking!

Suikoden 2
Suikoden 1
Eiyuden Chronicles
Suikoden 3
Suikoden 5
Suikoden 4

Didn't play rising, I should get back to it.

As someone who only vaguely remembers his time with the Suikoden games, I will say, this one is better than 4 by default since this one's actually finished, whereas Sui4 was barely started(obvious Alpha).

It has balance issues, but is better in design than Suikoden 5 if only because there's incentive to use people other than the cover party, whereas I seem to remember Sui5's balance being skewed heavily towards them simply because they were required in a lot of the game, and would be higher level.

And at least compared to Suikoden 3 I understand what the bad guy is doing and why he's doing it, whereas in Sui3, Luca was just acting evil for evil's sake seemingly half the time, then it turned out he had a True Rune, and wanted to destroy it to give the finger to god. That...I mean it makes sense in some way, but he killed a LOT of people to make it happen, and had people that were oddly loyal to him if his whole goal was to die/destroy the rune. I do get he needed the True Fire Rune for it to work, but honestly, if it had been an option, I'd have let him live at the end, just cripple him for life.

That said, ranking

Sui3
Eiyuden Rising(Worse/more limited story, gameplay was quicker though, and more varied)
Eiyuden Hundred Heroes
Sui5
Sui4

I still but Sui3 above it as I don't recall any major gameplay issues, in fact setting up the 'peace manor' place in the extra chapters was oddly fun from what I recall, and getting Luca's perspective was amusing, even if it again kept calling into question why anyone would be loyal to a madman, and sapped any sympathy that the main plot tried to give them or him.

I posted mine on the Suikoden board...

I think it was...

2
3
1
Eiyuden
5
4
Rising, if we're including it. It was fun, but I still prefer turn based JRPGs. And as someone that 100% game, Rising felt like a chore. Too much so for a companion game.

Simple:

Suikoden 2, 1, 3/Eiyuden tie, 5, Tactics, 4, Rising last due to not being a JRPG and more Trine style

For me it is:
- Suikoden II
- Suikoden V
- Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes
- Suikoden III
- Suikoden
- Suikogaiden Vol II
- Suikogaiden Vol I
- Suikoden Tactics
- Suikoden IV

Suikoden II
Suikoden I (purely nostalgia)
Suikoden V
Eiyuden Chronicles
Suikoden III

I haven't played IV since III burned me out pretty hard when I played through it a few years back. Eiyuden is a pretty good framework, but it doesn't quite scratch the Suikoden itch for me. Character balance really diminished how excited I'd be about recruiting a new character, and I miss the story revolving around a protagonist bestowed with immense power and how that power can be used or misused. True Runes were badass, primal lenses are kind of just whatever.

I looooved III as a kid, but time was not kind to it. It just feels too sluggish to me now. I might try IV someday but the general negative opinion on it has kept me away.

1st: Suikoden 2 As I matured Luca/Rugal is not that great of a villain.
2nd: A Tie Suikoden 3, and Eiyuden Hundred Heroes (Its a true successor, and the largest game when it comes to content.)
3rd: Suikoden V
4th: Suikoden 1

Garbage: Suikoden IV I hated the tediousness of traveling by ship, and the Hair helmet main hero.

Suikoden IV is meaningless if you don't play it with Tactics. The End of Tactics gives a hint as to what they were going for in Suikoden IV. I would even argue that Tierkreis, although being a betrayal to the fans who wanted some closure on many hinted mysteries (cough Hikusaak cough), was an attempt to give a cohesion to the Suikoden universe.

When you think about it: the plethora of anachronistic cultures in the Suikoverse makes no sense. The One World/One King's plot line was a beefed up version of what they were going for with Suikoden VI. Too bad they ditched the whole "price-to-pay-for-immortality" thing that made so many characters feel deep. Often in Suikoden you have conflicted/depressed immortals that are in contrast with foolish/embolden mortals. If you go back to Chinese litterature, you get where it comes from.

To make it short:
- Suikoden II
- Suikoden // Exit Fate
- Suikoden III (for the plot // Suikoden V (for the game/story)
- Suikoden IV (+Tactics) // Tierkreis for the attempt to try new things out.
