Spoilers: Perrielle in late game
Am I the only one who think the story is better if Perrielle dies protecting Nova?

It's not like I dislike her. She's actually my most favorite female character, with her wits and politician's views. But the lack of tragic and meaningful deaths of the main characters in this game makes the story unappealing for me.

I was kinda expecting with dread that Perrielle would be killed by Dux Aldric when she stayed behind, like Odessa in Suikoden I who died so Tir became determined to fight in her stead. But even if Perrielle DID die then, I still think it would make Nowa's cause stronger. No one we are emotionally bonded with die in this game. Kyshiri villagers all survive. We learn quite soon that Leene doesn't die. Yaelu's parents are not really introduced to us and die offscreen. Even the king of Norristar (I can't even remember his name) is reported to die offscreen and he's not a character that creates much impression upon us. It didn't make me sad to see Elektra and Maxim mourn him.

I used a non-spoilers guide to ensure I got every hero for the true ending. But then I became curious and looked for YT clips on what will happen if Perrielle dies. And I prefer her saying she was protecting hope through shielding Nova and asking Janquis to comfort her in her final moments to her surviving the arrow because Leene just shows up.

I'm hesitant to pick up from an earlier save to see whether I can continue from that to get Perrielle dead because it was quite tedious to go through dungeons and a lot of battles and scenes to get to that point. But maybe I'll check this 'bad' ending out if I have time. I saw the scene and read the endings for all the members, but I want to hear the Japanese dub (which is better than English IMO) and see how scenes where Perrielle plays a role are changed with her being dead.

Short answer, yes.

Her dying works better for the story, and the "good" version of the scene is quite frankly terrible. Leene is such a nothing character, and her showing up in the last minute to rescue Perrielle is lame.

Agreed. I don't like how Leene pops up here and there and everywhere and she just happens to save the day. It's downright bad writing. I thought they could have the whole thing around Perrielle more dramatic. Like Nanami. She survives, but tells Shu not to reveal it to Riou. We can have Leene recruitable in another way and Perry wounded and saying all those things as if she were going to die. And leaves it at that. Then if you've recruited everyone. it's revealed that she survives. If not, she dies.
