I'm fine if there are nods to romance (think akin to Flik and Odessa, Hix and Tengaar, Riou and Eilie, Prince and Lyon, etc), without it being a supposed feature of the game. Romantic elements are fine, just not that faux romance feature like we often see in western RPGs.
This I'll agree with!
God I hope this isn't the case, Never played a suikoden game before but I ran into this problem the first time I played through Fire Emblem. at very least allow us to go back and grind up character. I have to imagine that will be case though with "100 playable characters" would be sadistic not to allow players to go back and level ones they may have neglected.
Well in Suikoden the level gain is scaled in a way that lower level characters catch up very quickly. I assume it'll be the same here.
Some spoilers from Suikoden 1:
In Suikoden 1, Pahn leaves your party early on and comes back a while later (at same level they were when they left). Now i think its like level 15 vs level 50 (that you are by the time they come back) so if you continue on with the story,
Pahn will have to fight a level 50++ General Teo in a 1 v 1 fight to buy time for your team to run away. Now if you left him level 15 (as you would 'normally' expect as you are just running forwards without thinking) Pahn will get beat down and killed in this 1v1 due to being horribly weak against a very tough General.
BUT if you backtrack the moment you get him back and go farm mobs with him in your active party, he will quickly level up to match your team. NOW when he's level 50 or equal to your team and he has the 1 v 1 fight with General Teo,
instead of getting beat up and dying, he can hold his own (still a tough fight, but if you follow the prompts you can win) and what happens is General Teo spares him for fighting well once you 'win'. So he stays alive and carries on with you!
The last thing I want is to be playing Nowa and having an option of three girls to take out to dinner or something like that.
I enjoyed how Suikoden V brushed up on it a little. There's a point in the game while recruiting an optional character you meet a, "Fortune Teller," who basically says, "You're surrounded by strong women, but that's not a good thing. Each will jealously guard your affections from the others, and you will die a lonely old man." Felt like a bit of a jab at the hero harem trope. Well, that and Oulan back in Suikoden II also.
Feels like the folks in charge of Suikoden don't care for that trope, and I fully embrace that attitude.
