No option to rename, the game is more like suikoden iii. Hero has personality and talks. Oh he also has a name and other characters called him by that name.
so every game, custom and not? Voice acted means nothing for not having a custom name, nor talking, dont see why not let us name him.
However, this is PC so I doubt it's impossible to rename them. It's probably very easy.
Just sounds like the Developer's choice.
Edit: Atleast from the older games and few new games i played , where the characters can speak and has personality, that can be renamed,
But in Story , GamePlay , CutScenes or all 3 , will still have their true names be said or by title.
Unofficially, there are guides around that teach you how to change the game's txt files and it may be possible for you to find all instances of a character's name in the text files and replace it with your desired name.
You can find a guide here, in Lynnemie's mod discussion thread.

The other characters will still say the original character's name in the voice acting, but you should be able to change the character's name in the texts.
FFX was Voiced and you can still rename Tidus.
There are ways to have voice acting with renamed characters.
Also with AI, voicing custom names should be far more doable these days. (Without sounding like a monotone robot obviously.)
MiHoyo is notorious for it, with all the textboxes saying your name but all the voice acting saying "the Traveler" or "the Trailblazer" or "HEY, YOU."
