how the hell do you actually win it? lol I have my starter top and two practice ones, how do you get better ones?

About winning it, no clue, but enemies seem to drop tops pretty often once you get the bag.

When can you actually start playing this mini game? I feel like I've been pretty through in exploring, but I've also met enough NPCs referencing me not being up their level / ready for them that I worry I missed the person who teaches it.

I nearly missed the fishing rod.

After you acquire your headquarters, go back to Eltisweiss or however it's spelled.

I'm just old, but this top game doesn't make sense. The things mash into each other and the numbers go down and thats fine, but I press boost when the UI says I can and sometimes it gives a buff, and sometimes it just does nothing. Then I lose and walk away.
Is there a timing to boosting that is better? Can I control how the top moves in any way? Does starting position matter? Do I just need to come back later after I find better tops?

Position can matter cause it could cause a quick hit. But for the most part it looks like its mostly "find better top then the enemy and use the element strong against it"
