instead its largely just get top with best stats

which i guess is accurate to how these kinds of things work in RL But you cant buy upgrades for your top you have to farm better tops from monsters which just drags the entire side quest out across the entire game

Top with best stats is just the failsafe. There is strategy in timing skills to be concurring to create clashes or looking at the buffs you get versus the buffs they get or the element/attack type matchups. Ultimately, you want to know how to pick a winner from all the available information.

Ultimately the strategy is in picking your team. Unless you look up a guide of where to farm the best tops, then you're not likely to be overwhelmingly powerful and will need to choose smartly which top to put up against each of the opponents, based on element/stat/skills.

And yeah like the previous poster said, there is some skill to being able to force a battle by using your ability at the same time as the opponent. You can really win matches you have no business of winning if you can do it consistently.

It felt so good having my first win from timing the clashes as well in situations where buff vs buff I would lose but only by a little. Definitely more strategy than OP is giving it.

There's a tiny bit of strategy in using timing to either create clashes or ring-out your opponent, but not much. Mostly it just depends on having better tops.
