Can someone explain how SP works after battle?

What determines the SP you start with in battle?

Random from what I can tell, but some characters seem to have different weights. Nowa almost always starts with 2 with Iugo almost always starts with 1 and sometimes 0 as a quick example.

Every character has a base SP (seen in the menu), you just get an extra 6 SP (for a full party) distributed out randomly to your party at the start of battle.

Thanks, was wondering about this. I wish this was stated in a tooltip in the game. Consistently starting with more SP actually gives some weight to a characters' overall strength (not a lot, but still).
