If you have GamePass, it’s up on there and you can give it a try before committing to a purchase.
this game is pretty good though. However, they are still patching out minor bugs and hopefully improving QoL and stuff over time.
In general though, jrpgs aren't especially known for their difficulty
As of right now the game is pretty darn good. I'm only a few hours in and it seems to be keeping my attention. The dialog is cheezy in certain parts, though it does not ruin the game or anything. I think it's a perfectly good JRPG to get into if you aren't too familiar with the genre and want something fun and entertaining. Playing on normal difficulty and it's been pretty smooth thus far.
If you want something super beginner friendly and don't mind more action based combat, there's Tales. They're all very approachable, if you can stand some tropes and what not. Berseria is the best story, Arise has very fun combat in my opinion.
If you want turn based combat there's Dragon Quest 11 thats a good jumping in place. Only thing I don't like about that game is that there's a silent protagonist ( thats just a me thing) otherwise its pretty great.
But if you specifically want something more in that 2D/3D kind of format, there's Octopath Traveler of course but I don't really like the way narrative works in that one, its all broken up by character and there's not much interaction between them. If you're just in it for gameplay this wont matter.
But I preferred Triangle Strategy which is in the same engine but is instead a Strategy JRPG with imo a more cohesive story. Its a good one.
And then of course there's this game, which is like Suikoden so more classic turn based. The premise is that you're in a war/rebellion and you need to build up an army. There's some minor strategy areas where you control entire armies but its a small part of the game and very simple. Most of the time you doing Jrpg things with a party of 6.
Just came out so a few rough edges but I really like it.
So yeah, take your pick and see what you like.
Good a place as any to start. Its not too hard, not too easy, but quite different from everything around it that it does not feel bland at all despite its 90s roots.
It's above average JRPG.
Just leave settings as Default is fine.
Some of the world settings are different to other JRPG (just as all RPG may have some differences in world setting), you should and will learn that when playing the game.
