Mages can do the same and more damage than fighters and against multiple enemies at the same time. The fact they're bound by MP makes them not crazy overpowered by the time you get the 2-star elemental runes. Even at low tier a well placed spell can SIGNIFICANTLY make fights easier if not outright trivial
As for Lian; she's been in my party from the start and hasn't left... her basic damage ignores armor AND has a good chance to stun an enemy whereas her SP-attacks ignore defense on TOP of bypassing armor and hit like a truck whilst ALSO being fast as hell on the ATB bar. She also has decent defense stats and HP
EDIT: And that's not even mentioning her hero-attack with Nowa can deal some SERIOUS damage
Some spells are better than others, yeah. Utility spells seem more effective than damaging spells.
That's true too, I haven't tried out the level 2 runes yet, I'm only just starting to get them.
Reason: She sounds a few decibels higher than everyone else on JP. I love the attendant system for that reason and always shelve her if she's mandatory.
2. Game beats itself now
...Provided you can avoid friendly fire.
The normal runes were all pretty under-powered usually. Especially compared to Unite Attacks. And when you get Kai so early and can kill an entire group... It just got ridiculous.
I rarely used the runes anyways in Suikoden 1 and 2.
Physical can crit which nets you better damage output in the end. not much different between magic damage and physical attack (There might select few enemy that has low MDEF with high DEF but so far I haven't really found it). at least Suikoden has a good magic scaling on early and mid game.
The good thing about magic so far it can deal some AoE damage (some physical rune and combo can do that too), and some non-scaling magic like buffs is kinda useful I guess? (non-scaling means no different if low or high magic unit use it, so again make magician actually looks bad).
Have you noticed how single target Unite Attacks are incredibly weak and underwhelming? Most is better to just use basic attacks of same heroes instead.
I have my finger crossed for future patches and their balance adjustments.
