Just pick miso soup, fried egg, and omelette every time and you always win with a score of around 40.
As someone said the mini game is bugged, and they only give good scores to starters, when choosing a starter, main and dessert should be part of the game.
Accidentally did this from the 2nd battle onwards, noticed that 2nd chef spammed eggs to high ratings and had enough of losing, messing my hand up cooking the high end stuff, believed in the egg all the way to the end, 0 losses. Eggcellent
Basically I've been waltzing to Trey with the same combo of poached egg + fried egg + omelet. Doesn't seem to matter what you put as appetizer, main dish or dessert. It's just best to go with the food with the overall better average scores.
Opponents were scoring laughably low with their exotic foods, one of them scored a flat zero (YES ZERO), while the above combo reliably racks between 25 and 35 points, which is usually more than enough to win.
Now I need to find the scroll of earth, but I agree with the fact that this minigame is just trash.
No. I cannot imagine anyone enjoying this. I didn't even remember Suikoden 2 having a cooking contest so I probably took advantage of emulation to speedhack and save state through the whole affair because it's terrible.
There isn't enough information provided to make decisions about what food would be appropriate to prepare, it doesn't seem to have any respect for the categories it asks for to begin with, and it's just an arbitrary unfulfilling skill-less time sink.
At least in suikoden 2 the mini game had more depth to it. You would pick an item and then you would choose an additional ingredient to make some unique, this game is just pick and choose, tap a, and apparently they need to be all appetizers otherwise you get a low score.
The cook that made "exotic" foods literally got a 0, a whopping 0 all the 3 rounds. This mini game is a joke, its so half assed and long its just a waste of time.
Anyhow... I have four foods that in any combination will win the entire cooking contest... Why? Because they are so generic that everyone at least likes them alright.
I'd say if we ever get an Eiyuden 2 or Suikoden 6 and they do some cook battles, i'd prefer something much more predictable. Meaning i'd like more info on stuff.
Show us if e.g. a Sachertorte is categorised as Sweet, Western, Baked, Cold.
And let us either through interacting with the characters, or using the research characters services or even by having those characters in our group for a while (like it was back in S2 with the unite attacks) learn what characters like.
And just because most of us are lazy bums, have an ingame ledger one can look up known likes/dislikes when choosing what to cook.
It was the same mechanics though, except you could customize a menu and it was easier to tell appetizers from desserts.
I like Eiyuden Chronicles but in some ways it does feel like a downgrade from Suikoden 2.
Especially the Fishing Minigame, IMHO the best fishing Minigame in any JRPG ever was Breath of Fire 3 and after that Suikoden 2 was a close second, this doesn't even compare it's just press a to catch fish.
