**DEAR R&B STUDIOS / 505 GAMES - IT'S YOUR GAME. DOWHACHYALIKE**
There's nothing woke here.

It's the same thing Working Designs would have done.

Encourage gamers to SPEAK WITH THEIR WALLETS. Go and play Dark Souls or Days Gone or any other dull, over serious game that's available to them.

Do not coddle. Stand your ground.

Now...if you want to offer some sort of "Purity DLC" for $1.99 for people to have a literal, overserious translation, I would support such an option be available for those people.

But consider: the people squawking weren't going to buy your game in the first place. They're too used to overserious characters in their game and they don't want humor. At all.

Some of the issue might be that Working Designs worked with more quirky titles like Lunar. Suikoden is supposed to be more serious in tone.

Having played for a few hours there's absolutely nothing woke about the game.

If anything, the localization feels just like they used to do it.

I suspect a lot of people complaining are "newer era" gamers who don't understand - this is what it was back then.

Working designs did objectively bad and wildly incorrect translations regularly my guy, I dunno what to tell you this is not the defense you think it is lol.

Ah yes, Working Designs. The publisher that has every single one of their releases fan undubbed, and fixed to take out their view on difficulty, wherein they completely messed with the games balance. (see also the dumpster fire that is Popful Mail US)

Where the voice actors were the CEO and his workforce.

Truly a shining example of localization.

I invite you to take Lunar TSSSC, and compare it with the properly localized Silver Star Harmony.

The point is that they got beat up over it - constantly - but stood their ground. And it's the same thing: liberties with localization that certain people didn't like.

BUT...those games even now are some of the best ever localized. It didn't matter. And it doesn't matter here, as long as they stand their ground.

Silver Star (Sega CD) was the best of the bunch BECAUSE it was light-hearted fun. Especially when you heard the outtakes.

You guys just don't like the light-hearted fun - which is fine.

My problem is when people position it as an "issue" when it's more a preference. You PREFER deadpan serious non-funny generic nongendered characters. Which means, you don't buy the game because it's not your preference. Not attack it because they did a localization and took some liberties.

It's NOT woke. It's light-hearted humor that some people don't like. Despite countless games of the era (and even after) doing the same thing. I gave the example of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, one of the best games on the Switch.

IT'S FINE TO NOT LIKE IT.

It's NOT fine to attack it as an "issue".

You PREFER deadpan, serious, nonfunny, generic, nonbinary, etc etc. Say that.

But don't you get it? They game used the word "chud" which is an insult towards right-wing people! Even though the game used it completely in a non-political sense to make fun of an Arnold Schwarzenegger musclehead, those right wingers were so offended by the word being used one time thirty hours into the game, they had to get on and complain about it. It's the game's fault!

Which is exactly why the publisher said they are planning to do a second pass on the translation?

What are you even defending, OP? When the publisher itself already admitted there's indeed a problem?

People reporting a problem is called customer feedback. Have a nice day.

Really?

Could you link me to a statement or similar (genuinely curious)?

Except they didn't. "Refinement of localised text" doesn't mean what you think it means.

The MCU and its consequences to entertainment have been devastating.

I prefer the characters as they are supposed to be, not as the localizing team imagines they should be.

And I'm not sure where you get it from that the original didn't have jokes or wasn't fun. I'm fairly sure Working Designs did not insert the hot springs cut scenes, so the jokes were already there. The crux of the matter lies in the delivery, and if it retains the original meaning.

Also by your own admission, you think the properly translated original characters are all unfunny and generic. How do you know that, if you only played the dub?

I'm not even sure where nonbinary and nongendered even come to the equation, there was not a single mention of any of it in my post, but please do rage on.

It is not an attack to point out that multiple backers (you know the people who made it even possible that this game exists) and longer reviews (you know, the people who paid for this product) point out that the localization is lackluster.

It is just you perceiving it as such, as to why that is, I have no idea, but to each their own.

I've been a Suikoden fan since I played Suikoden 2 25 years ago. This game was on my wishlist the moment I learned about it, and I've been heavily anticipating it. I already have the prequel action game in my library, waiting to play them together, and I have *seen* more than a few samples of the horrible localization. That is why I am not buying this game. I am hoping the studio corrects this problem and removes those responsible for this localization problem in the first place.

If that is redone, I will be here, I will be buying this game. I play games to enjoy the original intended experience, and I play them as an escape from all the real world cringe Reddit politicking that the localizers here decided took precedent over authorial intent of the writers.

I vehemently disagree with the OP's statement. I hope the studio understands there are a lot of us fans who are not willing to let interlopers sully our experience, for a game we've been waiting 18 years since the last Suikoden installment to play. You have my hopes in your hands, 505 Games. Thank you.

the OP seems like the kind of guy to drown a steak in ketchup because he didn't like the more subtle flavorings.

"the localization is lackluster. "

That's fine to feel that way. It's not an excuse to attack them.

"I'm fairly sure Working Designs did not insert the hot springs cut scenes"

Working Designs changed the hot scenes (fairly certain it was Eternal Blue) to make the guys' hot spring dirt simple to walk to and the girls' hot spring had overpowered enemies to make you work for it. If anything, that's the polar opposite of woke. So yes, they took liberties with even the gameplay. And they got beat up for it.

Again - my beef is people acting like this is something new. It's not. It's been done, many times. It's how it was done. This is a nostalgia act.
