Haven't wiped either but it just feels like the enemies make me forced to heal up after every battle and it drains my resources. Also haven't seen a smith after getting the castle so not sure the recruits will even do much good with lvl 1 weapons.
But yes, the enemies hit like trucks on Hard if you don't match or exceed their level. That coupled with the high encounter rate and absolutely insane MP requirements of magic can make parts feel like a slog where you're constantly running out of resources. Luckily the way the leveling works, you're back up to level parity within a few battles.
Suprisingly, I play on normal and they even then hit hard. Perhaps I have under equipped heroes also? But seeing those constant full spawns of up to 6 is pretty tedious.
The magic is nuts, so damn expensive.
Its not really a grindy game because when you are underleveled you gain huge bonuses that get you to where you need to be super quick, and when you are overleveled you get none pretty much. But it can be tough, more so towards the beginning imo. You'll get more and more tools that make things more convenient mid-late game.
Oh yeah, Im just suprised to see normal chaff units two shot some casters and medium fighters.
If it is you can make it much easier by going to Bounty Hill and farm in front of the stationed guard (the one that prevents you from going further), there will be appear enemies that will take you to about level 30 in a single battle and level 33 in 4-5 battles. With a little more grinding (but not much mind you), you can get to 35.
I just managed to do it around lvl 27. I think, But thats good to know! It was a damn painful place and I quite several times taking breaks.
To be honest, after the opening the game feels really weak. The tree folks is really not interesting at all right now. Suikodens darker tone, especially Suikoden 2 is not even remotely close in Eiyuden.
I really don't recommend going into this expecting to relive your first playthrough of Suikoden II. Times have changed, we have changed, nostalgia goggles are foggy and this was a small kickstarter team ( most kickstarters deliver diddly squat).
That being said, its a good game. A classic style 2.5D JRPG with a cohesive story ( which is really nice after coming from Octopath), some Suikoden like mechanics (castle building, and a million characters. of course). And yeah, if you take it for what it is, I think you'll have fun.
IMO some of these old games that we have idolized for years, like Suikoden II or Chrono Trigger, are really good games, but we build them up so much in our mind they can barely live up to themselves... let alone other games.
Of course, I know how it is. I just expected a bit more mature story. But I hope it grows on me. I honestly didn't like the graphical style but Octopath Traveller II I liked al ot in how it looked. But I think it will grow on me. I just found the Tree Folk arc a bit boring.
I know what you mean, they did go a little PG on the story. Not there isn't some mature themes, they just aren't so.... in your face really.
Yeeeah, I can imagine there is some dark themes. But its no Luca Blight really.
And one character going "Farthead" to Ersthwine or however he was called was odd.
Yeah that.... was a poor choice for sure. There's a couple more like that. It was Lian at one point I think ( though I could be mistaken) says 'stupid head,' like really, are we in kindergarten?
Fortunately, Lian actually kinda grew on me and she's a staple in my party. Same with Francesca. She's supposed to be a healer, however I found her better as dps with an inferno rune and her physical attack aint bad either ( but mostly I keep her around because I find her hilarious).
Yeah, I think Lian does grow! And Franscecssa is pretty hilarious. I should give her a inferno rune!
Good to hear things get better!
Also bit disappointed in the duel system, its weird.
