One thing they could have done is to warn the player that further progression could lead off locking the zone or the character so we could double or triple check before that happen...

The OP is either mis-informed or misquoting something. At no point did the developers say there are no missable characters. Players still make mistakes and sometimes you have to take ownership of them and not shift the blame to someone else.
Its kind of the charm of the series. I know Im gonna miss a few characters the first playthrough. I probably missed more than a dozen characters each my first playthroughs of the original Suikoden 1 and 2. LOL we didnt have walkthroughs back then either :P

Until guides are created or people with too much time on their hands comb through it.
Some of you are expecting playthroughs like in Suikoden 1 and 2 where everyone knew the optimal thing to do at all times.
