Story is pretty often the final touch when it comes to Early Access games, or at least all of the ones I've played. Usually the story comes in the last handful of updates because the gameplay needs to be what carries the game.
My opinion and perception is that SR should remain a single player -- though I wouldn't say no to a third installation or a spin-off of Slime Rancher, similar to Don't Starve Together, wherein multiplayer is built into the foundation rather than sutured onto a game made for a single player.
the multiplayer mod is often recommended and i, as many others, have already tried it and it worked fine first but late game it had so much sync problems it wasen't worth to continue playing it sadly. Hopeful for his second remade multiplayer mod in the future.
That's a reason why most of my friends didn't buy the first one, they were hyped about the game itself but wanted to enjoy it with others (myself included) so they didn't purchase it after learning that multiplayer wasn't planned at all. SR2 could really profit from a multiplayer mode as many people would enjoy sharing the experience with friends.
TL:DR: 2 options
1. Add multiplayer without story as a 2nd gamemode.
2. Ignore potential customers that would LOVE to share the gaming experience with others.
Okay, I agree that maybe Slime Rancher 1 should remain single-player officially because there is a new game in development.
But speaking of multiplayer, you don't have to ruin singleplayer mode or ruin the singleplayer story while making multiplayer mode. As I said in the first paragraph, it is just an additional option that expands your limits with your storytelling potential, not spoils it. Even in Don't Starve Together you can play alone, like, the choice is yours, it is just a feature presented loudly in the title to attract coop-lovers.
And the second Slime Rancher game could implement this feature too, but you don't have to use it. I thought it is simple, if you don't want to play certain gamemode, you don't play it, just like in Don't Starve Together you can play singleplayer mode only.
Except it seems that SR2 is going to be a direct sequel focusing on Beatrix again, specifically about her exploring Rainbow Island's secrets. So it's likely the story is going to be a continuation, so adding multiplayer wouldn't make sense.
That's why I'd say just make a spin-off game with minimal story that takes place on the Far, Far Range rather than changing anything that has to do with Beatrix in particular.
Also it's not a matter of "don't want it, don't play it", it's a matter of "I hope the devs don't spend time on a feature that doesn't fit in what they seem to be trying to make"
I think they could fit anything, even if they could implement multiplayer mode.
