Maul, How Does It Work?

I've seen enemies get picked up by beast-form melee attacks. There are passive abilities that affect maul attacks.

How do maul attacks work?

I've tried to figure that out s well. I thought it was something that happened with charge attacks but I'm not sure

The Panteliz can do it, You charge/hold it's basic melee and release and it will grab the smallish enemies, it will hold it until you melee again. And you can slam them onto another enemy lol. Other forms may be able to do it aswell.

The issue is getting the grab to go off reliably, then remembering to use the interact button and not the attack button to shake and maul them

Houndra and Crocolisk can maul. It's tricky. You need to grab an enemy with a charged bite attack, then attack again while it's in your mouth. It usually just slams them for me, but I got it to maul at least once as I have the achievement. My first and only maul was with Houndra. I think the enemy in your mouth still needs to have some HP left for the maul to work. Would be great if the devs commented here with a better explanation.

These things are a little rough, when something happens when you're trying to do something else and you don't know how or why, and you don't know when or if it'll happen again. The respawn for dying is somewhat fast and painless, so maybe treating the main run as a sandbox is a good idea for your sanity. I don't have a ton of uninterrupted quality time to get good myself, though.

What is more confusing is other maul style attacks work when the body is already dead. At least for my raptor form I had a dead body dangling from my til until they despwned!

There may or may not be a bug where the ability to grab an enemy stops working after a while, I've been trying to get some small enemies (thought it had to be the right breed) for the last hour and couldn't. Closed and rebooted the game, and now it's working again hmm

I feel like it would make more intuitive sense and be potentially easier to manually control if you could grab smaller enemies into your jaws with the secondary.
When holding mouse2 to ready yourself to spit, as you're holding your jaws open, you can still spit with mouse1, but if you want to bite/grab the nearest enemy, then press E, and then keep spamming E for the shake/maul attack?
