Is there decent class/character building in this game?
Looking to get into a diablo esc game with my husband and I enjoy playing as a buffer/support. So how different can each character be?

Your main character human form gets 3 classes to pick from out of 12 possible subclasses. Each class has something like 12-15 Active/Passive skills to choose from. Each skill whether active or passive can be leveled up to 6. With very few exceptions, putting additional skill pts into an active/passive usually only gives numerical bonuses and not change the skill much. Max level is currently 40 (with plans to increase it on the roadmap), giving a total of 43 skill pts to distribute among your 3 classes.

Your character also gets to freely shift forms to a beast who gets their own separate skill tree. Although theirs is locked into the beast's racial skill tree +1 more skill tree chosen from 2-3 skill trees out of a possible 4 (depending on the beast's race). You can freely swap out what beast form you can shift into as they are treated like Equipment.

You can also at any point go back to an easy to reach location to respec. The respec system is great because you can do a blanket reset EVERYTHING, or just your attribute points, or your class skills, or just a specific beasts skills, or all beasts skills. It costs some money but for how easy it can be to farm money its really cheap. So feel free to make mistakes and have fun!

To answer your question a bit more, there is a large variety in how the different subclasses can approach the game. There's enough Actives/Passives and variety in the slkill trees that there can be full Healer builds, or a full buffer, or a debuffer, magic dps, ranged physical dps, melee dps, tank, etc.

Follow up, we own a steam deck instead of a gaming pc, hows the quality?
I dont have a steamdeck, hopefully someone who does can share a bit about it !

The frame rate of the Steam Deck lies between 40-60 with the exception of one area that runs around 30 (we are working on optimizing that area a bit). The Steam Deck also freezes sometimes for some players right now but an update will be live tomorrow that fixes most of those freezes. We have also added an option for map quality in the upcoming update since having the map opened heavily reduced the frame rate on the Steam Deck (and some PCs as well). Hope that helped and let us know if you have more questions :)

Just one, how controller friendly is this game? Grim Dawn had a lot of issues with my controller so i lost interest pretty fast

The game should work well with controller and you can rebind almost everything. What issues did you have with Grim Dawn?

Menu navigation was really buggy and the game acted like i had a keyboard plugged in at all times so it kept switching the button prompts to keyboard prompts.

Some of it is Steam Deck issues im sure.
