A question about Aether Forge

I am new to the game and have a question regarding Aether Forge. I know that using stone I can level up my hero or recruit new units. There is however a icon which I can not understand what it is. It is a rectangle icon with four colors. Do you by any chance know what it is?

F12 does not work. Strange! It is the icon below each hero on the Aether Forge page.

I think the icon means that those heroes with the icon beneath are not in the city.

If your talking about Aether, the other material used by the Arcane faction that does show under the character portrait in the Aether Forge then that would be it. Four colors in a rectangle with a number to the left of it showing how much you have similar to alchemy by you know... aether.

How can I get Aether?

Wizards gather special resource called aether each battle, which can then be used at aether forge to learn new spells, get resources, or even increase your heros stats. Artisan get ore after each battle, and also can spend ore at aether forge for similar effects.
