Pale Heart?

Does anyone know what the Pale Heart item in the shop does? Does it increase your number of hearts?

Basically gives your heart a shield. 1 heart with 1 pale heart = 2 hearts. As an example, when you have 1 heart left and you use a pale heart, then you're able to unlock a cursed card by eating the pale heart instead. Graphically, it turns the heart white until the pale heart is broken.

Note that you cannot have more pale hearts than you have actual hearts.

Pale hearts are also a one time thing, not an increase in max hearts. So it doesn't regen.

But 4 hearts +1 pale is enough to survive a boss or devil deal damage loss.
