There's a little dot beside the worker when you open up the "assign worker" dropdown. Green means they live close, yellow means a bit of a hike, and red means they live far away.
After i while i got the hang of "calculating" how many workers i need. So if i am creating and expansion to collect iron (3), lumber camp (+3), 3 places to turn that lumber into charcoal (+3) and 2 blacksmiths (+2), so i need 6 houses nearby, 1 extra for storage :)
From the worker overview management dialog, which is where you should be able to manage all aspects of the workers. Having the distance indicator only on the small dropdown seems like a missed feature. To be fair, though, longer worker distances don't seem to be very detrimental, especially considering how generally unoptimized the rest of the labor process is (e.g. workers not filling input resources, or transporting a single item, etc.)
And I agree that the worked transport/distance thing is not there yet. Like it look me forever to figure out that my charcoal burners weren't working because they were either a) travelling to get wood or b) at home eating. So I set up a small wood-only stockpile right beside my coal burners and that helped with production.
