Heroes and soldiers
I feel really confused about the military bit. I have several questions and hope someone here has some answers. Sorry if I'm just being dense about all this.

What exactly does each soldier cost in upkeep?
I can only assume it has some kind of cost - I tried building a little army (sixteen of each) in creative mode, and to my surprise I suddenly found myself having -1000 coin, with an additional -190 each payment. In creative mode! I wouldn't dare try to create a few soldiers in standard mode at that rate.

What do I do with them?
Can they be utilized in some way to help the hero fight skeletons and stone giants? If so, how?

Speaking of the hero, isn't it a bit odd that the only way to increase his stats is to date Winnifred? And how do I get him past level 3 0%? He's been at it for nearly two years at 0% at this rate, am I perhaps supposed to do something else besides have him hammer away at the dummy?

Well, I'm not into the war/military aspect and would rather ignore that altogether, but at the same time I would like to clear my maps of the random obstacles for building that ruins, giants and graveyards make.

Someone will answer the other things but you can only level the hero to 3 with the training dummy so as to make it not abusable. you normally gain experience on the hero by fighting things and enounters. You can get level 3 with I think 2 fights at the moment so there's really not a big imbalance there.

Thank you Chompers, that is good to know. I would have had the hero chop away at the dummy for years before giving up, now I can just have those four fablings work somewhere else.

A little update, please forgive me for double posting.

So I had my level 3, 0% hero go around and inspect every ruin, and fight every skeleton graveyard, and he ended up level 4, 97%. That's it, can't get any higher as there are no other things on this map.
So I had him go after the one thing left, the giant. Ouch. Bad idea. Bad bad idea.

But that leaves me wondering, what does it take to take on the giant? And is there no way to upgrade our hero's weaponry or armor with the smithy?

You aren't supposed to solo the giant you are supposed to attack him with an army, the Hero leading.

Oooohh, ok. That really is good to know. I haven't bothered to make any soldiers in the standard mode. As, you know, I don't know the cost of them yet. Maybe I'll give creative mode another go to see if I can figure out how to at least use them, I couldn't before.
