Loving this game, but...
Finally rediscovered this demo in my library and gave it a shot. Must say, this is one of the most entertaining games I've played in ages and I'm loving the detail and creativity. I typically won't buy any EA title over about $5 because I'm tired of basically setting fire to money, but I was ready to buy regardless because of how good it is. $20 is steep but this one feels like it's worth it.

Then I read the EA questionnaire and saw the game only covers two years right now, and only *nine* years in the planned finished version.

I get that there's a planned storyline/timeline, but in games like this I rarely play for the story; I play to build something magnificent, and one of the worst things a game like this can do is arbitrarily say "okay, you've played enough, you can't go any farther."

I did a little looking through the Discussions and saw that there was a meeting about an endless or sandbox mode that was supposed to happen, but that was nine months ago without a definitive update since.

PLEASE tell me that we'll be able to build open-ended. I very much want to love this game and it really is something exceptional, but if it's going to be a fixed-length run then I'm afraid that's kind of a dealbreaker.

Yep. You will not get breaking news stories any more, because they are tied to real world events and the current game time. But you get plenty of randomly generated regular news stories to play with. The map is finite, and you will eventually exhaust it, but that will not stop you from carrying on. I've made it to the end of the four years a few times with plenty of the map and rewards still to explore

I agree. :cozybethesda:
There are four years in the 'story' and you can play indefinitely. The game will not force you to stop playing.
Four years today, no doubt there will be more as the game is developed

So when you hit the end of the four years, what happens? The game still runs normally and you can go as long as you wish?

To start, $20 is pretty reasonable for a well developed game with great replay-ability. It is an early release game so they've done a lot of work already to get it ready for the public. They have a lot more planned. You have to fund things like that. Either that, or you don't believe developers who make "exceptional" games to make a living wage.

Next, you can keep playing past the end. It just tells you you've reached the end of the story but you can keep playing. If by "open-ended" you mean place items wherever you want and build the tower as high as you want, it is. Even the demo shows that. I have not reached a limit in terms of building height.
