But you could also prioritize fresh news of the week and use old news to fill blanks.
But discovering the news should be the priority, anything discovered after Thursday you can just ignore until Monday the next week and than send a reporter and it won't come up as old news. But if you send a reporter out on say Friday than it'll be old news next paper.
yeah it is a bit of a stretch but was the easiest to make players understand when things get old. If all item have individual timers it gets a bit more ui heavy and harder to follow for players. But i do agree that it sucks with Saturday/Sunday news items.
Still thinking about it from time to time. Maybe some color coding coding with items could work. always open for new ideas.

Glad you guys are thinking about this, because I agree, it does make things hard. I really think it would be nice if it lasted two weeks. Perhaps only old news on the second week. I would rather be in a place were I had to not publish stuff. That would be a more interesting mechanic I think.
I don't have a problem with it, because the way I see it, the story timer started on the Monday, and it's just that my telegraph operator didn't find it until Saturday. I quite like the way that the game is a constant desperate race to keep up with the news - it makes me feel sympathetic towards the newspaper editors in the movies who are always yelling at people.
Maybe different expiry modes can be used as different difficulty options.
You just get 12 "weeks" per year, not 52.
At least in my copy of the game.
The dater top left also just knows months and years, not weeks, months and years.
I think news should only become old if it has been finished for longer than 7 days (meaning if you finished a story on monday or tuesday, you can print it that week without being considered "old news").

You don't care really :)
You lose 250 for each negative tag. (old news being one), meaning an article with 3 bronze, 1 silver + 1 gold will reward you with 8000 if new and 7750 if old I don't even count the potential combo with such article. Meaning you just don't care about the loss (special quest aside)
What you want is simply discover as many news as possible during the week, throw away those with only one tag most of the time and consume the most lucrative old news before they dissapear.
Side note, They are a week old since your telegraphers could have had heared about it on monday. You can't get every scoop.
