News getting old a bit too fast?
Another thing that I haven't wrapped my head around yet: How is this whole news thing going? You print every Sunday, so if a story appears right before Sunday it's marked as old news on Monday. I have 7 stories in work (only requiring assembly) and all of them are old news, even though they might have been reported only a day before.

Seems like this makes not much sense. It feels like you can't even really have fresh news most of the time. Or do I just need to spam type setters and assemblers all over?!

I guess you have to figure out a got ratio of reporters to typesetters and assemblers.
But you could also prioritize fresh news of the week and use old news to fill blanks.

You really need to get the news to you faster, so more telegraphers. Than I usually have 2 reporters to each thing, Sport, Politics etc. Than 2 typesetters and 2 assemblers.

But discovering the news should be the priority, anything discovered after Thursday you can just ignore until Monday the next week and than send a reporter and it won't come up as old news. But if you send a reporter out on say Friday than it'll be old news next paper.

Old news should be held in a strategic reserve. Got 2 sports stories but could use a third to max out same tag bonuses on a page? Grab that old sports article from last week. But if you get 3 fresh sports stories or maybe only one, then the old sports story is fine to let rot on the vine.

Yeah I think I found out how to utilize it correctly by now. Felt just a bit odd in the beginning. Still kinda weird and unrealistic, that news from Sunday just get old the day after. But I get that it doesn't work if you have a fixed week interval for printing.

yeah it is a bit of a stretch but was the easiest to make players understand when things get old. If all item have individual timers it gets a bit more ui heavy and harder to follow for players. But i do agree that it sucks with Saturday/Sunday news items.
Still thinking about it from time to time. Maybe some color coding coding with items could work. always open for new ideas.

And thanks everybody here for helping each other out.

Glad you guys are thinking about this, because I agree, it does make things hard. I really think it would be nice if it lasted two weeks. Perhaps only old news on the second week. I would rather be in a place were I had to not publish stuff. That would be a more interesting mechanic I think.

To be honest what we print is not a real newspaper. It should be called a periodical or weekly as it's only printed once a week. I often use older items when need to supplement the newer stories when the paper is a bit light on for newer stories or if a matching story is needed. It is much better to use a old story than have a blank space in your paper. Ads can be very usefull in this regard and play a big part in your bottom line.

I don't have a problem with it, because the way I see it, the story timer started on the Monday, and it's just that my telegraph operator didn't find it until Saturday. I quite like the way that the game is a constant desperate race to keep up with the news - it makes me feel sympathetic towards the newspaper editors in the movies who are always yelling at people.

Maybe different expiry modes can be used as different difficulty options.

Keep in mind, the game doesn't go to next week. it switches to next month - although you have to have a newspaper out until sunday.
You just get 12 "weeks" per year, not 52.
At least in my copy of the game.
The dater top left also just knows months and years, not weeks, months and years.

What I find disappointing is that if you have these huge cases that require multiple reporters and multiple steps, and its all finished by monday but cannot be used that week only as trash filler, because its considered "old news". Sorry that I took a few days to send out 4 reporters to investigate 3 locations guys... and in the end the story yields less than reporting on some random 1-step stuff due to the old tag, and it ruins the challenges that state no "old news".

I think news should only become old if it has been finished for longer than 7 days (meaning if you finished a story on monday or tuesday, you can print it that week without being considered "old news").

I don't know the best way to put it into UI, but I would prefer a system where individual news items get old on the 8th day after they have been discoverd on the map. Possibly a small corner-icon that just counts down from 7 to 0 with a tooltip saying "gets old in ... days"

You don't care really :)

You lose 250 for each negative tag. (old news being one), meaning an article with 3 bronze, 1 silver + 1 gold will reward you with 8000 if new and 7750 if old I don't even count the potential combo with such article. Meaning you just don't care about the loss (special quest aside)

What you want is simply discover as many news as possible during the week, throw away those with only one tag most of the time and consume the most lucrative old news before they dissapear.

Side note, They are a week old since your telegraphers could have had heared about it on monday. You can't get every scoop.
