Most weapons have really strong perks, all depends what you get and what you're comfortable with.
If you're having trouble with being exposed for too long, take the Coilspine Shredder
or Rotgland Lobber (imho second strongest weapon in the game): you can take one shot and then hide, rinse and repeat.
Dont forget to use grapple points a lot to easily get out of trouble.
Re weapons, it really comes down to the traits. I won't pick up a Hollowseeker with Phased Rounds, or Spitmaw with Wide Maw, or Launcher with Mega Rocket.
As for how to progress, that's up to you. Do one third of Biome 4 and get into 5 quickly to get some practice in. Or, do all of Biome 4 to get more health and artifacts first.
In general, I found Biome 5 to be a noticeable uptick in difficulty compared to the rest of the game.
