Hello,
did anyone tried Returnal on the new Steam Deck Oled?
Is it (with 30 FPS) playable?
Thanks in advance!

Just put in 5.8 hrs. Average 32-40fps with some sub 20 dips in extreme areas. Ive underclocked in bios 50/50/50, cryoutils 2.0, FSR 2.1 on performance all low settings, vsync in game, frame limiter 40fps enable tearing. Plays amazing, faster oled ram definitely helping.

Thank you for your reply and your experience. This sounds pretty good. Did you try it without cryoutils und without underclocking as well?
Thanks again and have a nice day.

Yea, this and another video were the only sources i ve found. The results of these two videos were different.
Thats why it would be great if we could get more experiences of users who have the new oled steam deck.

I would really like to try returnal, but I am very unsure if it is a good/ok experience on the new deck (I do not need 45 or 60fps, constant 30 would be ok for me).

Thanks again and have a nice day!

Ps: if anyone else has experince with the new steam deck oled and returnal, it would be great if you could share your experience with us.

Hey there

Decided to test this on the OLED running from the included drive. As that YouTuber posted, I'm getting about 35fps ~ 50fps o at least the first stage with enemies and turrets.

Low settings preset w/ Depth of Field set to Off. VSYNC on at 1280x800 16:10.
HDR works and the badge in the sub menu shows HDR but the colors seem to be washed out, so having it off looks much better.

Any questions, feel free to ask!

Hey there,
thanks a lot for your reply and test.
This sounds good for me. Thanks for the information with HDR as well.

Was it a fun experiance for you compared to a stronger gaming device?

I think I will finally buy Returnal at the next sale. I am really looking forward to play the game.
When they announced the PC release, I was very happy at first and pretty sad when the first test on the steam deck were released.

Have a nice day and thanks again.

I typically play at full settings on the PC (though there are still the performance issues that have yet to be resolved/patched). So I'm used to it playing around 80fps, though, despite that, trying it out on the Deck, I could see myself enjoying it even at 35 avg with all settings on low.

I wanted to mention too that, the cutscenes themselves seem to remain their original quality, so even if you play on low, you'll be able to enjoy the cutscenes beautifully. Also, the in-game text whether in the menus or just playing the game are crystal sharp. So when setting it to low, the textures themselves become not as beautiful sure, but the text, words and cutscenes don't seem to take a hit, so that's a positive to keep in mind.

EIther way, enjoy the game! It's an amazing game.

This was everything I need to give Returnal a try on my steam deck. I am really looking forward to start with it next week.

I wish you all nice holidays and merry christmas (for me, with Returnal :-)

PS: I will give you an update as far as I tried it 👍

If you are a hardcore fan you can get it somewhat playable - if not I don't recommend it.

Even with lowest settings an max FSR you will still hit very low fps on major engagements.

I don't reccomend setting FRS to ultra perfomance though - the game looks to blurry and you don't seem to gain any fps.

If you can't put up with the performance dips - the game will still look amazing and it is (somewhat) playable. -> I will load it onto my deck every time... :)

Short update:
I bought the game yesterday and played it for about an hour. I had no problems so far. 35-50 fps in the first part of the game (which is very satisfactorily for me)

The only thing which is very annoying, is, that there is no possibility to start a fresh new game (once you started, you have to play with that save file over and over again).

I will start a new topic about this, because every explanation in the web is for windows user only).

But the performance is -so far- good for me…. Without any additional workarounds/setting (no cryutilities, standard proton version).

Thinking about picking this up too, but the performance is a big issue. I was wondering if there's any particular version of proton that's best for this?

No, I just use the standard version. Which Deck do you have? LCD or OLED? Performence is slightly better on the OLED version. The more enemys there are, the lower the framerate gets. At the beginning of the game, the fps range is from 35-50fps on the OLED deck (I think one time I had a bit less).
I can not tell you how it develops in the later gameplay, I only played some hours until Palworld caught me 😅

I have an OLED model. The beginning of the game is pretty quiet though, it gets very busy later on. Enjoy palworld! I'll sit it out another while :)

Thanks mate, I will, quite funny game (palworld).
When I have more experience with the later gameplay of returnal, I will give an update here 👍
