This is the best video game ever made
I'm a professional and don't have much time to play but this game is fantastic. It brings me back to the arcade days when eye-hand coordination and visual acuity were important in video games. I wish they'd add new difficulty levels though.

Best ever? No.
One of the best? Could be, if it actually played like all the other playstation ports.
Could be, if online co op was drop in instead of waiting at the sphere for 20+ minutes.
But i understand what you're saying. The gameplay is good, but it's just not good enough.

The game needs an arcade hard mode or something to play act 1 and act 2 in a full run without losing upgrades at start of act 2 with the game that makes act 2 harder than in story mode, due to upgrades carrying over to the new act.
Better yet, make arcade have no upgrades at all. Only weapon proficiency.

But then you got the players that says "well you can play the tower if you want to continously play" bla bla bla. I don't want to play the tower over and over again with it's same boring environments, ALONE.

I almost bought a PS5 just for this game. I was worried I had overhyped myself, but luckily I love the game. It's one of the best games I've played in recent years. I also used to play in arcades. A masterpiece in gameplay.

if you like this game, try playing Control. very similar to in mechanics, combat and world interactions with a illusion-like scifi story.

I don't really have much love for Sony 1st and 2nd parties. tLoU and uncharted bores me to tears, God of War is annoying AF, and Spider Man is pretty but every bit as annoying to play as anticipated.

So I definitely never had plans to get a PS5. But, the moment I saw Returnal, I knew that it'd sink its hooks in me the moment I got to try it.

I was not wrong.

I find that Rogue Likes are a good genre for busy adults. They're nice, because they're all about the journey, not the end, and you can have a complete, fulfilling play session in a couple of hours, with room to dive right back in when you're good n' ready.

I was a console player until recently but I also don’t like interactive movies. I bought ps4pro for God of War and didn’t have any fun with it. Couldn’t push myself to play it. I watched the whole story on YT instead as this was the only enjoyable aspect of that “game”. I have recently finished The Last of Us on PC but also didn’t enjoy the gameplay.

Returnal hit the spot perfectly for me. The way you keep learning. The enjoyment of just moving around. Simple controls. Explosions. Enemies. The look. Atmosphere. Bullets, lights and colours.
Even the sound of everything is so cool. How weapons sounds, the sound of opening chests, teleports. How enemies explode. Pure fun and I love it :)

I didn’t expect such game from Sony.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Returnal exists because Sony needed a graphical showcase for their new PS5 within the first quarter, and that HMQ was the closest to achieving that under the given timeframe. So I think Sony threw resources at them to get the game out.

Cuz yeah, it's very much not like a typical Sony blockbuster title.

For starters, I really enjoy it >.>

I think the real shame of it all is that Returnal is not going to become a household name because of the stigma of difficulty, and also the part where Returnal is just a very hard game to demonstrate. As much as I love the combat loop, it often feels like I spend more time thoughtfully examining each pickup, only to circle back and pick them up in a specific sequence. Not great Twitch fodder.

I think this game is the absolute **best** at using mechanics, audio, and visuals to illustrate how its themes operate in the human mind, meaning depression and grief. Every aspect of this game (its difficulty, its sense of 'progression,' the songs you hear when you're playing, the setting itself) all work to show the player how depression and grief affect a person. I was floored by that. The game play itself is nothing new, but how the video game itself is USING the game play to enhance the story's themes is pretty terrific.

I would definitely group this game in with the likes of Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. I dunno what to tell you... I guess my kink is just watching people suffer unimaginable trauma >.>

Lmao
Are you aware you dodge 90% of attacks by just... going sideways ?
drumaddict Apr 15, 2023 @ 1:55pm
Had this game been NOT rogue-lite, it's six biomes gameplay duration would be 2 hours at most. Great game, but when you lose it gets repetitive with the looting aspect. The combat is fun, even if you repeat the same basic enemies, but having to loot and build from scratch, is boring.
