Save scumming
After a bit of fiddling around, turns out you can turn off cloud saving, and just make a copy of your save file (located in AppData/Local/Returnal/Steam/Saved). At any moment you can delete your current "Saved" folder and replace it by your copy to get back to your previous save file. Use at your own discretion.

Just wanted to confirm that this works.

Yep, hate to admit it but I finished the game thanks to save scumming, and ended up enjoying it much more this way.
Btw, if you plan on using it, be on the safe side and create a few different save files – not just one. On a few rare occasions, I fell through the bottom of the map while reloading, ot got the "teleporter scramble" bug.

Its no shame to save scum a game which won't load a run mid way and has crashes.

Honestly, devs should always include a feature like this to stop people feeling held hostage by a game.

It's a single player game, enjoy it how you want. Not as if it'll ruin the coop experience for someone else.

Personally I didn't save scum and I think if you do then you're probably missing out on a lot of the audio logs and weapon trait upgrades.

I finished the 5 bosses after 15 deaths and there was still 1 weapon I had not found. Most of the my weapon traits were still level 1.

That defeats the purpose of the game to me and completely eliminates any satisfaction that could have been gained from beating a Biome the intended way but you know you be you and all that.

good idea to back it up regardless

You don't even have to turn off cloud saves. Just overwrite the files in the save folder with files you've backed up.

Being at 10% health and picking up an item that has a 50% chance to damage you and 50% chance to benefit you. Dem satisfactions.
