inconsitent stuttering
I'm getting very inconsistent stuttering in game. When I first installed the game, with settings at default Medium presets I had no stuttering at all. The next day when I loaded my game the stuttering was so bad it was unplayable. I tried updating my drivers, deleting the shader cache and reloading, playing with every setting in game including setting everything to lowest possible but still nothing seemed to work.

Finally I kinda gave up and after playing around with the settings for half an hour the stuttering subsided... another half hour later the stuttering completely goes away. Maybe my graphics card is just warming up?

Upon restart, we're back to stutter again so bad the the game isn't playable... I'm not really sure what to do. Anyone have any ideas?

I don't even care about hitting perfect 60fps or even if I have to run on lowest settings, my PC should be able to handle this game.

Recommended (Medium):
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 / AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT CPU: Intel Core i5-8400 / AMD Ryzen 5 2600 RAM: 16GB DDR4 OS: Windows 10 64-bit Storage: 60GB SSD

My setup:
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT CPU: Intel Core i7-8809 RAM: 32GB Storage: 900GB SSD

Here's the benchmark on the settings that worked last without stuttering

Did you install new nvidia drivers? Its possible the precache of shaders is not there anymore.

Why would they install nvidia drivers...?

I don't have an answer for you. Only that I have the same issue. Some days the game runs fine and other days it's near unplayable. The game really is a mess performance wise for some.

yes game is a stutter fest at anything over 60fps .... shame as I wanted to like it but Il be waiting and hoping for a patch myself

My PC:

Ryzen 5 3600, RX 5600XT, 16GB RAM at 3200Mhz, 1080p Monitor, and the game is installed on an SDD, but I also tested it on an HDD, High-Epic graphics settings, fps locked at 75 and it runs smoothly.

You have an i7-8809g, correct? If I'm not mistaken, your processor has 4 cores and 8 threads, you meet the minimum requirement, and it's bottlenecking your rx 6700 xt.
So the power of your graphics and the amount of your RAM are useless.

I recommend this:

Make sure there are no programs running in the background, this caused a lot of stuttering and fps drop for me.

Disable V-sync in the game settings, and in the AMD panel, in the graphics options go to V-sync and set it to always active, and for best performance put a low-medium graphics setting at 1080p or set everything to medium and lock the fps to 30.

And change the processor, at least for a 6-core, 12-thread processor, for example, and I recommend, if you are short of money, the Ryzen 5 5600 or 5600x.

I hope this will help you.

Lol i I thought he had a 1070. Any new driver would break the prechache. That said 4 cores its the bare minimum for playing now, I was hitting slowdowns on new games until I switched to six cores.

Eos is leaching players data at various rates. That's why sometimes you can see fps differences of 10 or more in the same areas changing each time you run the game

You using dx11?

GTX 1080, i7 7700k here. Game runs smooth as butter with the settings it recommends.
Only issue is the Fatal Error from time to time. Disabling Online Mode & Steam Overlay seem to help a bit & make them less frequent.

Tried dx11, but stutters.

Thank you. I tried with dx11 because I'd had issues with dx12 in the past, but no luck in this case

Thank you! this is really helpful... I had a little luck with turning off vsync in the game and on in the amd control panel; but even at lower fps caps I'm still getting stuttering. From what I'm reading online I might just have to hold out for a patch, which is annoying...

Can you say more about the processor? That's hardware I'd have to replace right, I'm running and NUC with an external GPU so I'd probably have to get a new PC. I do think this is likely a software problem since I can run most of the latest AAA games with no problems.

It is a good processor, but it can affect certain games, and yes, mainly the problem is the game, since it is supposed with a processor like yours should run this game well.
And you only need to change the processor nothing else, the rest is fine, since that processor is limiting the power of your graphics card.
But if everything works fine in most games, there is no need to change it, it is optional.

Then don't use it, don't complain and sit back and wait for a patch.

You arent alone same as you and OP on my end. I just wanted to confirm I finished the game and this was also happening to me through out the game as well.

Lost of stuttering through my playthrough (and ONE fatal error crash during gameplay).

Only had consistence FPS in a few places and when action picked up it also knocked the FPS down

Mind you im rocking an I9 with a 3080, im hoping the devs can fix the issue.

Was a VERY FUN experience, they just have to touch up the PC version and they have a winner on their hands with this one.

4080
i9 12900k
32gb ram
nvme m2
4k 144hz monitor.
i also cannot stop the micro-stutters and stutters from happening. stutter from entering a new area is something i can live with..
i tried dlss off or on, tweaked all settings, vsync off/on gsync on/off, had RT off completely including the RT audio however still occurs.
thought it could be my dual monitor setup so i disabled and turned off my second monitor as well but didnt help.

i also noticed that stutter happens at certain area/angle im facing in an area. if i move the camera to a spot where stutter happened back and forth i can re-create the stutter.

after playing couple of hours of returnal with stutters and jumping into other games that has no stutter at all, the difference is night and day...

hope this gets patched soon.
