Returnal is fantastic and I highly recommend it if you like the genre.
It definitely shares similarities with Hades and other rogue-lite games, as you would expect. But Returnal is not a copy pasted hades with a sci fi setting. At all. It's more of its own thing. Hades was much more refined.

Returnal mixes bullet hell with rogue-lite elements.

It can be brutal and hard. Pretty sure the devs have tweaked some stuff since the release of the game (some weapons got some nerfs, etc etc)

Playing Returnal is kind of like enjoying getting kicked in the balls. The pain is the dopamine. You can hate it but you keep coming back. Kinda like dark souls (but not really)

I kept coming back to play the game because the combat/gameplay was simply too. damn. good .

It's a fun game but can be challenging and frustrating at times.(there were at least 2 locations where I struggled a lot because there were certain mobs that were incredibly frustrating to deal with) .

  • + The combat is tight and fast. (the coilspine and hollowseeker were my favorite guns)
  • + The setting is sci-fi and mysterious/psychological.
  • +- The story is OKAY but I was very confused by the end and had to search online for what some of the stuff really meant. I love how the game mixes cosmic horror and alien mystery ( albeit as the story progresses, you kinda start to feel like that's not really the case. I did get a bit disappointed with the ending even though it's left to our own interpretation )
  • + The monsters' design is fantastic albeit I did find some of the assets to be reused at times. The bosses are incredibly fun to fight against.
  • + Sound design is great in this game. The ost is *mwah* chef's kiss. It screams mysterious and sci fi all over.
  • + Great voice acting.
  • + Graphics are so-so. Not exactly next-gen(pretty sure it was using upscaling to 4k from 1080/1440p ON PS5...) but the particles they used are crazy and the game still looked fantastic when I played it on a 4K TV.

  • - Some of the runs could ♥♥♥♥ you over real bad and you'd pretty much lose all your progress because the run was simply, unlucky for you (I think this has been tweaked since the release and the game is not as relentless in terms of being lucky/unlucky when it first came out)
  • - ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ holes on the floor you can't see. (basically, you'd think you could go further in a certain area but nope, that's just a hole in the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ area)

I played it back when I still had my PS5. It was one if not THE best PS5 exclusive at the time.

I'm definitely getting it again when it launches on PC.

I really hope it does well because Housemarque is fantastic and really deserves it.

Played it on a friends PS5 a while ago and my god this is so good.
This is easily my most anticipated game together with TOTK.

But man those Hardware req. are wild and my Rig wont be able to run it if this turns to be out correct :(
