• Sequels? Yes, I'm working on the direct sequel here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1948520/Dexter_Stardust_Returns_to_Outer_Space/ That should come out late 2023 or early 2024. I'm also working on a spin-off, here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2014470/The_Abandoned_Planet/
• Download the music? Great question! I should make those songs available. Maybe as a free download or something. Let me look in to it. But you can reach out to me at dexterteamgames@gmail.com, and I'd be happy to send you "The Lightyear" songs, "My Martian Girl" and "Spaceman in Love".
Thanks again!
thank your very much for your kind reply.
The sequel looks very promising but I was looking more for another Point'n'Click game.
I hope I dont sound ungrateful.
Im well aware of PnC games being very niche and that the target group isnt as big as on other genres but I can see myself spending some money on a kickstarter project or gofundme if you need support and I bet that there are many out there, who would feel the same way since its kind of a dying game-genre.
Anyway, I dont want to pressure you, I was just thinking out loud. It just seems you guys know how to make a fun PnC game with the right amount of charme and it would be a shame to see all that talent go away without publishing at least another game in the same genre.
Im definitely going to reach out to you cause of the songs but I also wouldnt mind to pay for it on Steam. You guys worked for it and I think a small tip is the least we can do since 10 bucks are already a very fair price for this game.
edit : And when I say "go away", I dont mean going out of business but moving on to other projects. ^^
Now, while my friends provided the voices of the characters and helped with the creation of the characters themselves, everything in the game I had to create myself. From the art and animations, to the music, programming, and SFX. Even the songs "My Martian Girl" and "Spaceman in Love", I wrote, performed, and recorded myself. Needless to say, almost all of my free time (between my full-time job, wife, kids, and other obligations) is spent working on games.
While I'm still in love with Dexter's story, I needed to switch gears for the sequel, not only for my own sanity, but because of the story. First, I didn't want to spend another 3 to 4 years developing another point and click. I would probably go insane. But, when I sat down to write the rest of the story, I realized that the second part of the trilogy is more action packed, and a bit more of a McGuffin quest. I believe an adventure platformer is the best way to tell this story, so that's the direction I'm taking for Dexter 2. Also, I personally love the genre, and after all, you have to create what you love!
Of course, that leads me to Dexter 3... what will that be? Well, I've been giving this plenty of thought. While I don't want to get ahead of myself (still concentrating on the tasks at hand) I believe I will be returning to the more traditional adventure game style. I'm thinking more along the lines of something like the new Sam and Max games, or Roki. Even so, there is a certain clunkiness/slowness to those controls, and that's something that I would look to improve for the third Dexter game. So, Dexter 3 will likely be more of a story-heavy, point and click adventure, except it would feature a direct third person controller (d-pad controlling the player rather than actually "pointing and clicking").
And yes - please reach out! I'd be happy to send over those songs. Very very happy to hear that people are connecting with Dexter Stardust and his story. Looking forward to completing the full story in the years to come!
I reckon something like this would only be possible with a lot of courage, dedication and stamina. And you can defintely feel the dedication inside the game. I tend to call these kind of PnC games, "Feel good games", because the do just make you feel good.
Just a few hours where you just let loose, enjoy the music and let the little puzzle and dialogs take you back to your childhood. A mix between a cartoon for the inner child in all of us, and challenging tasks to stimulate the brain. it worked 30 years ago with LucasArts and still works now with many independent developers who put much effort into their projects because like already mentioned in another comment, the big game companies dont care about that genre anymore.
The saddest part is, the mainstream gaming community does neither. Ive heard about so many Point and Click projects DIE, literally die after months/years of work where publishers refused to fund further development of projects because the sales figures in that genre wouldnt justify the expense of development. I dont think anyone knows better than you, how much time it takes to even develop a simple text based adventure with JavaScript, let alone a game based on C++, with full voice over and stuff.
Ive even seen one of my best friends losing his job in Hamburg,Germany (I dont want to name that specific gaming company which has released a ton of PnC games) because of downsizing and the lack of interest of buyers for this genre.
Thats why I respect your accomplishment even more and wish you all the best for every project there to come. You and your friends have done a terrific job and I will definitely buy this game a few more times for my friends&family to support you.
Im not into SNES adventure games, but Ill still buy the sequel to Dexter Stardust. Ill stay true to Dexter-franchise. ;)
There are some great point and clicks out there. I'm not sure which ones you have played recently, but some that I can recommend are:
• Bertram Fiddle, 1 and 2
• The Journey Down Trilogy
• The Inner World 1 and 2
Those are great and really feel like LucasArt successors. They have that whimsy to them that LucasArts games had, not too serious, but really fun.
Let me know if you have any more questions. Take care and enjoy your day!
