When you use your sword as a pole, if you press your key to swing it full-on, you'll find that your sword slips out from underneath you. Because of this, when you're at the apex, you'll fall not very far from where you were horizontally at that apex if you swing your sword very quickly.

Alternatively, if you just inch together, you'll be able to reach greater distances before you touch the ground again from balancing on your sword - kind of like pole jumping. Hope this helps a little.
