Short guide to scanning, but this really works well (IMHO)
The way scanning works is that after your main scanner discovers signals, you use your Booster first to start to strengthen the blips. Set it to put as much of a circle around the blips. You can crank the power up until they get in the teens then back it down to 1% power. Meanwhile pull out the Merger scanner and center it near the booster and also extend the AU range to pull the blips in closer. As you do this, it starts to weaken the percentage so you have to balance between the power of the booster and the power of the Merger to keep them in the 15 to 19% range. You may need to recenter the Merger in the core of the blips as they get closer and you should also reduce your AU size of scan range to tighten everything up as you pull everything towards the center. Those values, once the blips start to resolve, fill up the % meter on the left and once that is 100% you discover what you were scanning for. So keeping them in the 15 to 19% range you will have to have 6 to 7 successful blips resolve.

and the reward for all that waste of time is ?

I do it the opposite way.

I use the merger first to start bringing the blips in with very little power. I then see where they are "heading" for and move the booster there and the merger nearby.

As the blips get closer, I reduce the ranges. If the numbers go down, I add boost, if they go up I drop boost or merge.
Keeping around 10% until they are very close to the centre.

It's quite satisfying to resolve, but very little reward (At this time!)

Just doing it for the Explorer's guild XP. It only takes a couple of minutes to scan a system this way. I usually just do it in systems I took a mission for.

- Explorer EXP
- Adventure EXP
- Bounty Hunting
- Easter Eggs (yes there is some)
