If I were going for pure stats, I'd probably be using the Nexasis (with Faction upgrades it has 8 upgrade slots and 5 weapons), but the difference between the ships is pretty small at this point. Ship perks make a bigger difference, and both the Quuen (6 upgrade slots and 6 weapons with faction upgrades) and the Nexasis can roll with Holographic Mirror and Stabilizer (I think that's the name). Holographic Mirror creates a holographic ship that tanks for you, Stabilizer automatically stabilizes pods so you don't have to do it manually, which is a big quality-of-life advantage if you plan on making money from ship battles.
I would advise against using drone ships at this point, though. Drones aren't really working well; they're annoying to fight when NPCs use them, but they don't target well when players do. Additionally, the common logic at this point seems to be that when you upgrade a ship at a faction station, always take a turret as one of your two extra slots.
Basically, more guns is usually better, but there's not really much of a meta build at the moment, and there are people on the boards who claim to be doing well with 2-gun ships, so...*shrug* Best practices suggests the first thing you should do would be to max out your guild tiers for the Freelancers and the Bounty Hunters so you can get legendary ship components and weapons. Once you do that, you can probably do well enough in anything.
Of course it depend a lot on how you built your character and your personal preferences.
If you want to be good at everything Annihilating seem to be the most versatile.
- Good defensive stats and offensive stats. A bit low on speed and somewhat bulky but it is still manoeuvrable.
If you want a fast glass cannon ship you will probably prefer the Mist or the X-M1.
- Low on weapon slot but comes with the highest offensives stats. Extremely fast ship depending if you care about pods or not will depend on which of the two you go with.
If you like to tank and eat popcorn while you watch your underlings kill stuff for you. The Falron Tank or the Huqe ( Mining ship ) are the best choices.
- Both comes with Drones and a decent amount Shields/Armour. You can probably focus only on defensive stats with your pilot and get most of your dmg boosting your drone with Adventurer. Of course Falron Tank is the superior choice for fighting here...
The others :
Nexasis, good ship overall but seem to be outclassed by everything. Maybe im wrong and this the most versatile and not the Annihilating.
Quuen, Not enough defensive stats for its slow speed and bulkiness. Trying to dodge anything with that thing is painful.
Maradur, Good cargo, but it seem to be the only good thing about this ship. It need to be able to hold 6 captive to give it a purpose.
Xeghan Warrior : Still need to test that ship but seem very similar to Nexasis or the Mortha Gheran ( probably butchered the name )
Donnarenar, is there a reason to use this ?
Some notes:
-Annihilating does have the most weapon slots, but the EXTREME diminishing returns on weapons makes this less obviously good than you'd think. Remember that the efficiency score affects both damage and rate of fire, and your horrible rate of fire 3rd and 4th weapons will drag down the rate of fire of the entire group. I believe that there is no situation where adding a 5th or 6th weapon to a group actually improves your DPS. That being said running 2 groups of 3 and using the all fire ability is possibly the best dps in the game.
-Downsides of Anni is it's fat and gets hit a LOT and you can't get Holographic Mirror on it, which is possibly the most busted ability in the game.
-X-M is only 2 weapon slots but has by far the highest +crit, +crit damage, +damage, +fire rate bonuses in the game. Crit scaling in SB2 is insane, you're pushing +600% crit damage easily. +Crit is especially not that easy to stack, at least before you are super super high level, so getting +20% crit on an X-M vs like 4% on most other hulls is a very big deal.
-Low tankiness of X-M is completely irrelevant if you have Holographic Mirror. The real downsides are bad cargo and prisoner capacity.
-There's several hulls sort of in between, with less raw power of weapon slots than the Anni but don't have the special offensive stats of the X-M, however have more component slots, and how good that is depends on how hard you're willing to hunt the perfect t5 components.
it was a funny challenge that turned my ship into perfect fire!
Carrier (Mining ship) for "Destroy the Village of Pirates" Contracts for loot/cash due to it's massive cargo hold. Nothing worse than being half way done looting a Village and your inventory is full and you have to start destroying low(er) value items.
