Armor repair
It appears that damaged armor no long self repairs except at a station no longer on the fly as before 1.8.

??

Armor never repaired on the fly...

Unless you are saying that Drane isn't repairing anymore or the Repair armor kit that you buy isn't working.

As @Amereth stated, Drane actively repairs 0.2% of your Hull every second but ONLY if she's the top Commander in your Crew.

Drane hasn't been the top commander for sometime but ONLY after 1.8 did repairs of armor stop except at a station.

Probably a good change. Why and how would your armor repair itself without repair bots or Drane?

If Drane is part of the crew, why does it have to be in the lead slot to perform the task. That's what crew is for, multitasking.

So far the only sources of armor repair i have seen are Drane, The booster you buy at a kiosk and special perks on weapons and component that give you different ways to recover armor during battle but nothing outside of battle and no armor regen anywhere to be seen.

You can easily look at a ship and see that the Armor regen stat isn't a thing.

Shields and Armor do not behave the same way.

Until the most recent patch, armor on ships repaired even during combat.

That has not been my experience...

By default, Drane is normally your first 'crew' so she is in the default location (co-pilot) and you get her perk which repairs armour.

The only other way is at stations. If hull repair in space has stopped for you, most likely you moved her out of co-pilot slot

There's a Drane on understanding.

While I'm at it, what's the advantage, if any, of beam weapons over other choices?

As it should not. Hull repair only in stations equipped with repair facilities. Now, also, THIS would be a good use of a proper capital ship as a movable forward base. It should have fighter repair facilities (and medical, training, etc) that could repair hulls. Makes sense.
