Also, make certain you're entering combat with Weapons at full power (up arrow twice). That helps you kill enemies much faster.
I also think some aren't looking at Weapons correctly when fitting their Ship. The Base Damage is only as important as it's RoF, in that having a high Base Damage with low RoF could mean that a new Weapon of your Pilot Level is actually lower DPS than one from 4-6 levels ago.
To add to that, the Weapon bonus (only uses the 1st Weapon's effect). The only one that adds the most damage output (currently, probably due to bugs) is the +xxx% bonus. You can further add to the damage output by making certain your Components have +Rail/Beam/Pulse/Turret damage (based on your setup) and even RoF/Ship Damage/etc. It's a bit of luck of the draw with the RNG of Kiosk spawns but you can build a Glass Cannon, Balanced or Tanky build based on your Component choices.
I may not be telling you anything you don't already know but maybe you learned something.
Good advice above. Experiment with ships & builds until you find what works for you. If all else fails and you are still having issues with the freelancers rank 2 interview task, reload, head back in and try this:-
Deploy holographic mirror, melt one bogey or as many as you can. Keep an eye on shield - if it drops below one-third, switch to full engine power and retreat using engine burst perk if you have it, or W plus turbo ( LShift). Once out of range, recharge shield and wait for timer on holographic mirror to refresh. Then head back in on full power, target, deploy holographic mirror - rinse and repeat until the bastards are all dead.
