what are the most expensive minerals to mine?
i followed a guide to mining, and it said to start with gold, sell and get the mining ship.

so i did.

then it said to look for platinum, but it only sells for 3k a piece.

is there any more expensive minerals?

ive seen nikel, iron, wolframite, coal, and platinum. and some asteroids that say mixed..

Flying up to one and aiming at it will have make info box appear at the top of the screen

Huh? Aiming with what? Your ship? With weapons loaded or not? Not seeing anything

Or do you get out of your ship first? I played around for a bit but there is no info box anywhere.

From inside the ship, sometimes take a wee bit for the game to load the rock fully.

I've only ever taken out a mining ship so it might be tied to that

Yeah, I see the rock transform/render once I get close, but there is no information box anywhere. Maybe I need to find a mining ship. Any idea where I get one of those? I joined the mining guild early on, but not sure if you can by ships at the guild stations. Will look around I guess.

Have to have a mining ship to identify the roids, otherwise they just show as a quick blip if you are not using a mining ship.

The Wolf and Asortek minerals are both inside of the "plain" looking asteroids (beige/orange) that do not have a visible deposit. You have to mine into them from the top or sides to discover the ore if you are not using the misactor devices. The wolf is purple and gives 6xp and the Astor is green and gives 7xp.

Personally, I have found mining to be the fastest way of earning money in the game, hands down. Here's what I do:

1) From whatever ship you own (including the starter ship), visit the miners guild and become a member. You will be granted a hand-held mining laser and the ability to purchase a mining ship along with a misactor onto which you can load a mining laser and a gatherer. If you can afford to buy a mining ship and misactor, skip to step 2 below. Otherwise, use the mining ship kiosk to note how much money you'll need to get your first mining ship plus misactor and then perform steps A through G next.

- A) Travel to the nearest asteroid field and identify an asteroid with outcroppings of gold ore visible from the surface.

- B) Disembark from your ship ("G" by default) and navigate to the asteroid

- C) Identify a spot where you can stand on the asteroid next to an outcropping of ore and activate your gravity boots ("G" by default again)

- D) Press Tab (by default) to activate your hand-held mining laser and then use the scroll wheel to increase the Efficiency to 99% and the Power to 0%

- E) Aim your mining laser at the ore and hold the right mouse button down and then press the left mouse button down (you can move the mouse around if you want to slowly eliminate the ore *OR* you can just keep pointing at the same spot and the ore vein will last literally forever)

- F) Periodically check your inventory to see the ore increasing. It will form a stack of 99 and then start another stack. Each stack will sell for (conservatively) 130,000 after taxes and fees.

- G) When you have a few stacks of gold ore, as many as you think you'll need to buy and outfit your first mining ship, return to the mining guild and sell all the gold ore and then buy your first mining ship along with a misactor with plenty of tunnel and worm probes.

2) Travel to the nearest asteroid field but this time when you arrive, look around at the asteroids to notice that they are all arranged in rows.

3) Identify the end of one row and fly in your mining ship to the asteroid at the end of that row.

4) As you approach the asteroid in your mining ship (you may have to get so close you actually clip your camera into the asteroid itself), it will eventually (this sometimes takes several seconds) pop up a window in the top-middle of your screen telling you what ore that asteroid contains.

5) If the first asteroid does not say "Assorted" (which I believe is just a mistake of something in the game's codebase having autocorrected the word "Asortak"), then align your ship to the row of asteroids and fly to the next one in the row.

6) Continue performing steps 4 and 5 above until you find an "Assorted" asteroid (if checking methodically each asteroid in the row, this rarely takes me more than 10 minutes, tops).

7) Once an "Assorted" asteroid has been identified, launch the misactor ("4" by default), aim as close as you can to the absolute center of the asteroid, use the scroll wheel to ensure that "Tunnel" probes are selected, and launch a Tunnel probe (middle mouse button by default).

8) Activate the light on the misactor ("L" by default) and navigate the misactor into the tunnel you've just created, looking for bright green ore along the way. If you get to the end of the tunnel with no ore found, launch another Tunnel probe to extend the tunnel further into the center of the asteroid and move into that tunnel to look for ore.

9) If the second Tunnel probe does not strike ore, use the mouse wheel to scroll to the "Worm" probe and launch one Worm. That worm will try to navigate a random path through the asteroid until it strikes the ore vein at which point the yellow highlight around it will vanish and you won't be able to visually track it any longer.

10) While the Worm probe is looking for ore, keep it centered in your reticle so you know exactly where it disappears (NOTE: Turning off your light may make it easier to track the Worm probe). Once it vanishes, use the scroll wheel to select another Tunnel probe and launch it to tunnel directly to the ore. Continue using Tunnel, Bomb, and/or Worm probes as necessary until you have located the bright green ore. (NOTE: I do not move my mouse around while mining so I only need access to a tiny spot of ore because it never disappears. If you use a different method, you may wish to be more conservative with your tunneling, bombing, or whatever method you use to expose the ore vein so you don't destroy the ore itself while searching for it.)

11) Return the misactor to your ship, docking it on the yellow landing pad ("F" by default).

12) Disembark from your ship ("G" by default) and navigate through the tunnels you created until you are at the exposed ore.

13) Perform steps C through F above.

14) You can keep mining until you run out of ship slots. Each slot will hold up to 99 Asortak ore which, with a value of approximately 10 times that of gold, will sell for about 1.3 million per stack, give or take station fees and the miner's guild tax rate.

I've used the above method to build a reserve of literally hundreds of millions of TY. If you have need of lots of cash and are looking for a way to earn it other than grinding contract missions, consider mining. It's worth it, in my opinion.

I agree with everything SDShannonS wrote, above. I've accumulated about 400,000,000 credits mining Asortak this way, plus 6 smaller ships and a capital ship.
Simple AFK mining technique: I wrap a heavy rubber band around the mouse keys to keep them engaged (right first, then left) and leave the personal mining laser pointed at a chunk of green Asortak, with 99% efficiency, 0% power, then go to work. 12 hours later, my ship is vastly overloaded (1400/250) but that only slows down the transit to a station to sell the ore. Trip now takes 2 minutes instead of 1. Once ship is overloaded by even one kg, the "slow travel" penalty kicks in, but it does not get worse the more overloaded the ship becomes.
Also, after about nights of this, I made it to mining guild tier 3.

SDShannonS you should make that a guide / post of its own.

https://youtu.be/mkOvubmNjrc this video was helpful. He had 100M TY by the end of the day. Lots of effort but it's easy and chill.

I'd change your post to tunnel AROUND the center though, it's easy to blow out an Asortak node with the tunneler if you point it right at the center.

Oh yeah, I have done this, destroyed my asortak with a tunneler:steamsad: This was before I learned of worms /facepalm
