How do I mine?

I've acquired the mining beam, but don't know how to use it. I've looked over the keybindings, and haven't seen anything for it.

It should operate like a weapon. So you have to equip it to your ship and then use it in combat mode. But not 100% sure since I have not tried it for myself.

You can mine on foot too. Press TAB to equip yourself, In asteroids fields and in caves on planets.

How do you actually mine? I have activated the beam and started mining but nothing drops? It says I am impacting coal.

Your inventory should start gathering minerals that aren't stone (including coal). There should be something saying "+X coal/iron/gold/whatever" somewhere near the center of your screen.

I have tried 3 asteroids now with the hand held mining laser but have not gotten a single ore yet, so far the 3 i have been to say stone/coal do those not count?

stone is only from misactor(ship) mining, coal does count, each asteroid/rock has ore=/= crap hidden numbers(unless theres a way to scan them)

I have no idea I have the handheld equipped and have the efficiency cranked up to 99% and so far I have gotten no ore nor xp in mining guild I am quite confused.

you have to adjust mining beam with center mouse wheel. i find 72/ 42 for efficiency power level. go into the face of what your mining a little

also get on top of large roid and start going down most of them have cores of goodies

Just hit the TAB key to equip the mining laser. You can look at the asteroids and sort of identify what they have. For example, black splotches are coal, scarlet splotches are nickel, white splotches are iron, and yellow splotches are gold

I can't get my hand-held laser to stay on I have to spam click it in order for it to work.

you need to buy one of the mining ships which are sold at mining guild stations.
they have a little drone extension (misactor system) that you can board and fly in space to mine asteroids. it can be euipped with those beams and upgrades you've seen at the mining guild shop. but first, you'd need their ship ;)
