POLE
teg Aug 1, 2022 @ 12:20pm
Controls are unresponsive.
Using a 360 controller. The controls work fine till you need rapid application. Like climbing the second tutorial wall blocks. The first tutorial implied you could walk up a wall with repeated pole applications but I'm finding after I'm in the air, it's not wanting to hit the second time.

The tutorial video is playing at the same time and I see no way to dismiss it.

It's one tap per block. So to climb a wall you need to bounce off one block, push the controller back toward the wall, and bounce off the next block.

The timings and puzzles as you go into the game certainly aren't for everyone.

This.
The thing is, with tight timings like that, repeated trial and failure on a player's behalf can lead to them very, very quickly wearing out the sticks on their gamepad (or, heaven forbid, the keys on their keyboard) and getting equally frustrated at what should be a simple task to figure out.

There's a reason why most 2D platformers still use a directional pad (or have the option to use the directional pad) for platforming like this. For that trigger-finger reflex and finesse in wall-jumping is that reason. I'm fairly sure if the options were there to use the directional pad for movement instead, this might be easier to figure out. Maybe even just a single button bind option for the POLE that's dependent on the direction you're holding when you press it.

Don't get me wrong; I dig the aesthetic of the game and the premise, and I'm down for some jank-as-♥♥♥♥ looking IWBTG platforming hell any day of the week. But this ain't it just quite yet.

I fully support. I ran into the same issues bro. Tried on gamepad and keyboard. It bounces off the first die and can even bounce twice. But if you jump on the cube opposite, it does not bounce off it. In total, I suffered for about 20 minutes. I couldn't jump over those damn blocks. This is a failure. :steamfacepalm::steambored::steamfacepalm:

Is there any reason it's one stick per block? Seems pretty arbitrary in a fast paced game. Artificially increasing the difficulty? It's just the blocks but not the ground right? I can pogo-stick as much as I want, as long as it's not a block.

Well, I can't complain too much at "free" but it certainly a pretty brutal experience when you can't even get through the tutorial level.

You have to balance difficulty with desire to try over and over. This early in the game, I'm not invested in the game so, it's pretty easy to bounce off and just play something else.

If the goal is "I don't want people playing my game if they can't get through the tutorial". It's succeeded.

The first level is the easiest one, the difficulty becomes extremely hard in the later levels, that's why we made a free demo that shows off the first three levels, if players think they can deal with the difficulty in the free demo, then they could consider buying the game.

Looking back, we could have made things easier, so we will improve that in the future by maybe making an easy mode for POLE.

Thanks so much for all the feedback!

You can change the button binding in the in-game settings:

OK. I'll make another video, watch carefully. Every cube in the game has a left side and a right side. There is a problem with the character only bouncing off the left side of the cube and not bouncing off the right side of any cube! This can be seen at the very beginning of the video, right after the puppy, and at the end, after passing the policeman.
I press the B button, the character jumps, but after the character touches the right side of the cube, I press B again. But nothing happens! He doesn't jump! However, if you press the B button on the left side of the cube twice, it can jump back twice in a row!
Also in the game menu, the "Control" section is closed for settings.

Try these button presses:
A - Jump off stump
B - Right wall
X - Left wall
B - Right wall
X - Left wall and reach the top.

As for the control settings being inaccessible, that menu only unlocks after the tutorial level has been completed but this is a known issue we are planning to fix.

Thanks for the instruction. It turns out that there are different buttons for the right and left walls... But why is this instruction not available on the tutorial level?! This is a non-obvious button layout. Two buttons to jump off the wall. WHY?! WHY?!

Well, you can see on screen that it shows the four buttons to use the POLE (In your case they are A, B, Y, X) but we seem to have failed in explaining it properly, we will improve that. Thanks for the feedback!

This is what I was initially confused about. It would be nice to have something in the tutorial that explains the "one block per pogo" rule. Other than that, I'm enjoying the game so far

I'd agree with the OP, except I think the analogue is *too* responsive.

I'd prefer to play with d-pad on my Xbox One controller, but there doesn't seem to be an option.

Oh well, pretty much unplayable with analogue, so have uninstalled. But glad others like it.

Beat the game today in one long sitting. Takes a while to get used to the controls but once you figure it out it's all about timing the inputs, especially in the later levels of the game. For my taste the acceleration of the sprint feels a bit to much. I often ended up having problems to precisely land on the head of some robots. This was a big problem in one of the later levels where you needed to jump from robot to robot and if you miss you die in some spikes. Also sometimes the jump (downwards attack) didn't register properly when pressed at the edge of a platform which caused many frustrating deaths.
