Inventory Bug
I've noticed an issue occurring more and more that has to do with adding items to the toolbox in your inventory, as well as adding ammunition to the Ammo box when it is in your inventory. I will drag the appropriate item from the crate I am looting, over to the appropriate container in my inventory, but I will get a slightly Orange/Green ish color instead of the bright green which would signify you can fit the item in there. The item does not go into the container, and remains where I found it unless I place it in an open inventory slot. Essentially, it stops me from adding ammunition to the ammo crate as if it was full, but when I open the ammo crate there is plenty of room for the ammunition Im trying to add and I have to drag it to the specific stack of ammo instead of just draging it to the container itself. The same occurs with Items that can fit in the Toolbox such as scrap metal and Polymer.

I don't know as it's a "bug" per se. It has to do with how inventory works at the moment. Anytime you have a partial stack of something in any container; toolboxes, lunch boxes, backpacks, even including your main inventory, and you don't have enough "free" spaces to accommodate the item, it won't stack them. Try filling your inventory completely and try to sell something, it gives you the message; You need an empty slot to recieve money, even though your money pouch has one. a 2x2 item (like stone/wood etc), needs an empty and contiguous 2x2 slot available inside the container your trying to fill, to auto-fill it just by tossing the item there.

I would wager, the ammo crate doesn't have any empty slots in it. It's the reason why; even though you might have 30 rounds, you have to drag it manually.

It also doesn't auto-stack cooked meat (when you use the campfire). Each piece has to have a 2x1 slot when you cook them, or they will drop onto the floor. You have to stack them manually, and place them in the lunch box.

There are two solutions:
1. Open the container and place it where it needs to go manually. It just takes more time.
2. Leave a slots open so it'll fill the rest of the container (2x2 for toolboxes, 1x1 or 2x1 is sufficient for lunch boxes.) <- this is what I tend to do.

For me: I keep 2 toolboxes in my inventory (I play without backpack inception), one for the small stuff like blades, nails and whatnot, and the other for the 2x2 stuff like wires, batteries wood, etc. Both usually have available slots so I can auto fill; which makes looting faster. I will only fill that empty slot if something is full, and I need more of that item (like wood for building walls/fences etc).

Have no fear though, the Dev is presently working on revamping the inventory system, so perhaps this "feature" will go the way of the dodo. We just don't know yet what changes will be taking place.

Another thing to consider is: Set up a camp/base (or more than 1) somewhere where you can offload resources and not keep a full inventory.

Dude! Are you my lost twin or something. That's all exactly how I've set up my stuff. Bag-in-bag is a nono. 2 toolboxes, 1 ammo box, 2 lunchboxes. Third toolbox with fuel and repair kits is in my vehicle.

We have a similar play style, yes. Twins-in-game.

in the army i kept waterproof packs inside my ruck for food/socks/medkit/etc

but carrying a ruck in a ruck with an entire bedroom set inside with another with 7 rifles and 1000 rounds of ammo is a bit silly

in this game you can turn it off in the options, but once you have a vehicle and a base you dont need bagception

I think having weight system that effects speed and stamina would be cool too - optional of course

While I'm happy with how bagception is disabled, I would still prefer to be able to open a backpack that's in my vehicles trunk. You know, to polish that immersion a bit more :)

Not a bad idea. The same could be true for crates, boxes and most other storage. A car doesn't quite qualify as a bag, just as a type of inventory. It makes logical sense to be able to use backpacks, boxes, crates, tool chests, and whatnot as a sort of storage within the car's storage even with backpack inception disabled.

At this moment, Zurvivor is working on updating how inventory works, so we'll have to see what the end product is going to be of that hard work. Who knows, maybe this will be part of it. Maybe we'll see other things we haven't considered.

From what I understand, it has been discussed and ultimately discarded, but who knows if that is really the final say. I think if it fits within the vision the dev has for the game, then we may yet see it at some point. I really want to see it myself; albeit optional, so players can choose their level of realism.

Of course that would also mean the system for character traits (strength, intelligence etc) would have to be revamped at the same time, as carry weight is generally based upon the characters' strength.

I would also like to see some backpacks; like hiking pack, and those coyote backpacks that actually give you a 10-20% bonus to what the player can carry as they are designed to distribute the weight more efficiently than say; a school bag.
