The core Narrative is unfinished, but there are pieces of it spread across The Valley. There are plenty of PoI to clear, lots of Loot to get, and adversaries across the Map.
You can take over existing buildings for your Base, build from scratch wherever you want, or combine the two approaches. Vehicles are plentiful...or not depending on your Settings and RNG, plus the upcoming Vehicle Mods Update is going to expand that whole side of things.
However, it *is* a Survival Crafting game, not a Run-and-Gun FPS, so if you try to play fast and hard, you're likely to end up dead...a lot. Play smart, like they're really trying to eat your face, and you'll live a lot longer.
The Settings menu makes the game incredibly tailorable to whatever type of Zombpocalypse you want to play, and there's a Debug menu for Spawning in things if you lose something to a glitch/etc, or just want to test something out.
I might be biased, but I have ~1400hrs in game so far.
In the early game you'll be worried about securing food, water, and basic materials/gear. Depending on your spawn location(it is random) you may get wrecked by wandering bandit groups. If you don't though you should be able to build yourself up, and then turn the tables and assault bandit camps.
I have restarted twice. This time I disabled bag-in-bag and removed loot respawn on load to make it more challenging. I think I would have quit ages ago if I didnt make these two changes because it would have been tediously boring.
Loot is almost pointless now. I think I have all but one of the legendary weapons and primary the only loot I pick up is ammo. Im at a point where I just dont need anything anymore.
This will stay at the top of my list for a long time and Ill revisit it after major feature updates. I really enjoyed this game.
The game is a steal for the price it's at, once I've 100% completed this run and got all the achievements I'll be going back through for a 100% nightmare mode run.
The only reason to keep playing after that was to just find better guns/armor, but I don't care for that.
I would note that, if you're expecting a survival/crafting/base building game, this isn't it. Survival is really easy, crafting is pretty limited and not even necessary for most things (also, the costs for some things are often not worth the time), and base building isn't fun or even necessary unless you activate the Horde Beacon (a wave-based minigame a la Killing Floor).
I should note that the dev plans to expand the game in the future to address a lot of the aforementioned.
Another thing is, the map is static and not exactly huge (for its genre). Again, the dev will work to make it bigger, but I do think it'll become stale over time if it's not Project Zomboid huge, or lacks procedural generation, or there aren't multiple maps (preferably with biomes).
In its current state, this game is worth buying if you enjoy a game where you go on adventures to loot for better weapons/armor or if you can pick it up for cheap, since it will be a lot better in the future.
If you enjoy base building, I recommend you give 7D2D or Project Zomboid a try, especially in 7D2D, where there's some neat stuff you can do, like a sky base or underwater base.
Regardless of which game you try, building a base is a lot more fun and there's a lot more you can do. If you want to see examples, there's plenty of videos on YT of people showcasing some pretty amazing bases.
