A mouse offers quicker, finer, better control for precision aiming in most shooters. While the keyboard offers more shortcuts for better in-depth control of various options/systems.
Controllers excel with things like driving/flying games though, no doubt. I just wouldn't use one with a 1st/3rd person open-world survival game, ever. The developer will probably integrate controller functionality later on though, since the game's graphic style lends itself very well to consoles, hand-held gaming devices, etc.
But during early Alpha (which is where it is right now), you may have to wait a while, or use a 3rd party piece of software to remap some keys to the controller.
For sure keyboard / mouse does some things better. However you can't really chill on the couch with your PC connected to a big screen and use mouse and keyboard very comfortably, Compared to a controller.
Also personally I only really play more chilled open world survival games. so for me controller is just a more chilled and easy way to play. I can play while relaxing in bed, or on the couch. It's not about controller being better at all games. it's just controller is far easier to chill and relax with, over a keyboard and mouse.
