shot stick timing

I'm really struggling with the shot stick timing in this game. It's way more unforgiving than it has been in older titles I've played. Slightly early, open shots with someone like Kobe Bryant basically never go in. Am I wrong in thinking this? Is there a better way to shoot the ball?
