Railway Empire 2

PC CRASH and RESTART just on Railway empire 2
MY PC is a Z790 with 64Gb ram and a RTX 3060 and still the PC crashes and restarts when playing Railway empire 2. I have loaded the latest graphics driver 537.42 and still the problem persists. No other game causes a PC crash and restart, so it must be a bug in Railway Empire 2 and not overheating as has been suggested to other users.
It seems to be after looking at say a town statistics view and then selecting another tab like a train or track building tab that this happens.

I am running a similar system and have never had this happen. Based on my experience with full PC crashes, it often revolves around bad ram or malfunctioning cards. Last is a bad file in the install.

The only way to narrow down the issue is to swap parts...

I would start with the using the steam verify file integrity. (if it finds a file, I believe it will fix the file)
If it finds nothing, then reinstall the game.

If the first two options don't work then

Swap the GPU, if you can... One way is to use the integrated graphics for the game.... slow but if you don't get the same crash then you know your GPU is the issue.

If you crash with the integrated graphics or another card, then you may need to run a full diagnostic on your ram. (bios usually has this buried somewhere)

If this finds nothing then you will need pull all cards except the GPU or all if you have integrated graphics.

If it still fails you are down to the CPU and the Ram.

Saying all this, it could be out of date or lightly tested drivers.

I am using Nvidia's latest drivers and have used a few version in between. I also have a asus rog with AMD Ryzen 9. I also have a 40 series Nvidia made by MSI.

So I still might night be fully running the same code as you.

Hi Coach David
Thanks for your reply

I have already tried the verify of the railway empire 2 install, and I still had crashes.
As I said I have the latest Nvidia driver and I have recently updated other drivers too.
I have also checked the temperatures on both the CPU and graphics cards and they are fine.

I have just finished about 3 hours on another game without a single problem, so since I don't get any crashes with any other game on steam, to me this points to a bug rather than a hardware or driver issue.

I could try the other points you suggested that I have not already tried, but if its a bug then this wont fix my problem.

How old is your's PSU? Never seen a bug that crash your entire computer. That weird.

The PSU is not brand new, but before fitting it was tested with Thermaltake Dr.Power II PSU tester and all the voltages were OK.
My question is, if all my other games play OK without any crash/restart, why would it be a hardware issue?

Hi Nomo4

Since we are likely using the same Nvidia driver and my game never crashes... It could be that you should completely uninstall the game and re-download it.

I don't know the exact process that steam uses to do the integrity check. If they are not reading in every byte in the file, but relying on the OS to report, then there could be a storage level corruption in the game file.

I am running an AMD Ryzen 9 with the B650E ROG with Windows 11... so that is another difference.

Also my game crashed once when it was first released, I lost some progress but only the game crashed.

The other thing that sticks out about your crash, is the reboot. Crashes like that usually point to kernal level drivers like, video or chipset drivers.... but that would usually mean more programs crashing.

Have you tried running integrated video for the game?

Hi All,
I have uninstalled and downloaded the game twice from different server locations just to check, but all to no avail.

However today I have just successfully played about an hour without a crash.

Before this I had been checking the Windows event viewer for reported errors. I decided to copy the event viewer text into google and I came across a report that the PCIE gen could be set incorrectly in BIOS for the GPU.

I checked and found my BIOS PCIE gen was set to GEN 3, but my GPU is a GEN 4.
After changing the BIOS setting to GEN 4, I no longer had the Event viewer coming up with the error and the PC seems to now be stable with Railway Empire 2.

Hopefully this will be the end of my problems.
The only question this leaves is why did it only happen with Railway Empire 2 and not all my other games?

Many thanks to you all for your help and suggestions.

Hey everyone! Great that you helped each other and found a solution for the issue.😄
It might also effect other games, depending on the game and situation in the game. I'm happy to hear that it is working now.
